Question about Toshiba Satellite M45-S265 Notebook

1 Answer

Freezing/Power Problem I have had this laptop for about two years now and have never had a problem with it. Recently while the running the computer normally, (no huge programs running) the keyboard stops working all together, including no Caps Lock LED, or function keys. About a minute or two later, the computer freezes and I am forced to power it off. I let it cool off for a little bit and powered it up again, and after about an hour of running, the same situation occurs. I disassembled the unit, cleaned the heatsink and fan and checked for simple problems. Regardless, I had the same problem. Sometimes when I try to power it on now, the computer will boot up to the point where it should display the TOSHIBA logo, but right before that point it will shut down. Also, the correct LEDs are illuminated. I do not think the computer is over heating - there is no dust and the fan runs normally. The keyboard is properly plugged in, along with everything else underneath the hood. The laptop has been plugged into AC power 99% of the time over the past 2 years, perhaps it is something with the power/battery? Any possible solutions?

Same problem here. Mine is just over 3 years old. I never had a problem with it. Then, about one month ago, I'd turn it on and sometime during the boot sequence it would freeze. Pressing on the case near the touchpad got it to continue running, and then it would freeze again. I'm not sure what's wrong with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I have a Tosiba m 45-s265 with two partitions, one for linux and the other for Windows XP. I've been using it for 3 years (or more) and I think i have the same problem recently.

Firstly, I was working on Linux (centos 5) and it got stuck. It started with the pointer, then the keyboard, then the power button. I turned off the machine and it got stuck before any boot sequence when it tried to turned it on. Then I let it "rest" for a few minutes. When I restarted it I did it on Windows XP. At the beginning it was ok, and then it got stuck again, as it happened in Linux.

I checked if it was the network card and the hard drive, but it wasn't. I could test them with a bootable UBUNTU CD (7.10) and it worked without any problem, but when I restarted it the problem returned. It got stuck again.

I'm looking for BIOS upgrade to see if it can fix it. I would appreciate any help.

    Ivan.

I had the same problem since last week. I suspected the RAM (the add-on 1GB RAM which I installed when I bought my Portege 2 years ago). I removed the addon RAM, could be easily done from the bottom side. I appears to be alright. I am still testing. However, please let me know if you have an addon RAM? If yes, could you please remove and try? Let me know the result by mailing to murali@mech.uwa.edu.au.

Qosmio f60 fan goes on high speed and freez. It keep freezing. The only way to reboot it is to hold down the power button to turn it off and then turn it back on.

I have the same "computer" qosmio f60. I've replaced the hard drive, installed a new window 7 OS, changed RAM paging, power options, run the things with a fan pointed at the computer fan.
The fan goes to high speed and the HDD LED unblinking. I've brought the laptop to two computer shops whose owners knew less about computers than I did. I tried to go to a Toshiba recommended shop in Toronto except they changed to Apple-service only. I tried phoning Toshiba, they just want to change 4 bucks a minute for technical assistance. I've had this Toshiba-thing going on 3 years with the troubles starting after the first year. No one cares about this problem. If I see a Toshiba factory I'm going to chuck this red brick of cra through the window.
BTW it's not a virus or rootkit. I had to learn how to partition a HDD sector through some crazy BIOS program before installing windows. There's no virus or rootkit that's causing this problem.
It's mostly been freezing on me with games.

My compaq CQ56-219WM (recently restored to factory settings) runs extremely slow and i get a constant "high CPU useage" message. how do i fix this please?

When Norton is active it scans the computer for viruses and this will slow the computer down until it finishes.
You computer will improve with more RAM especially if has 512Mb of RAM.

You are more or less likely suffering from the effects of too much spyware and adware. I recommend running AD-Aware, which will scan your computer and quarantine any adware or spyware it comes across.

Off hand, I'd say overheating is a possibility so try using a can of compressed air to blow out the cooling vents and also run diagnostics on the cooling fan (Power plus Fn key to enter diags) If diags finds a hardware issue call Dell Tech

The laptop maybe having problems reading the disk. Get the disk properly cleaned and get the disk drive looked at. It might be a problems with the CD Laser reader. Get it looked at... or get another disk for this game. There might be a script error on the disk so the laptop isnt reading it.
Hope this helps.

Computer freezes...but not in the normal manner

The intel chip that is under the touch pad is the culprit. If you open the laptop by removing the keyboard, you will notice the chip just under the cover. i have tried putting pressure on it with an eraser and got some results. Mackay Rigava

Laptop freezes

"I never shut it off " Hope u r hibernating the laptop.. It seems that ur lap is junked with a lot of registery files and starup files.. so it takes a lot of memory to perform its operations and subsequently it hangs up.. and i hope u have installed norton anti viurs. this antivirus needs a lot of resources. better u install Mcafee. The best thing u can do is to install a fresh copy of windows. this will solve ur problem.. and remember keep the startup items to the min level.
