Has your Iomega drive ever worked with this particular computer under this particular Operating System??? Have you recently upgraded your computer or operating system??? Have you checked the Microsoft Hardware Compatability list for issues??? Here is the link for Win 7: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/?CMXID=ef_sem&semid=ef_GGL_851ac3fe441d9bbe86ee8334a709e4f2&WT.srch=1&ef_id=2437:3:s_261e5c7b1fd43ac28c94d632358a0e63_5518740682:TKiIwQqoEEQAAF-pvOQAACiS:20101003134433 From here you can also access other versions of Windows to match your OS.

If everything checks out in the hardware department, I suggest you go to the Iomega website and assure you have the very latest driver for your device that is compatible with your computer/OS.

My computer recognizes my iomega usb hard drive, but cannot open the files.

here is the best way to get back lost files.

1.) Stop using the hard drive IMMEDIATELY! Do not drag or create any files on it.
2.) Download asoftech data recovery program: http://www.asoftech.com/adr/index.html
3.) Install and run the data recovery program against the hard disk

Good luck.

My iomega hard drive worked fine before, but now won't show on My Computer or Autoplay. Help, please?!

First check whether your computer can see the external drive:
1. Right click My Computer and select Properties
2. Click on Device Manager
3. Expand Disk Drives by clicking the arrow on the left side of it.
Is the IOmega in the list of the disk drives?

If it is, then it is either:
1. The drive is faulty and the ID is from the IOmega controller
2. The drive is ok but severe bad sectors or other failing components prevent the drive to mount.

Testing the External Drive.
Listen closely to the if it sounds like it's spinning or it's doing something.
1. Clicking sound - The hard drive inside the Iomega caddy is faulty, either the pcb or heads, or both
2. Scraping sound - There is a platter damage on the drive. Recovery not possible.
3. No sound at all - Problem with either drive's pcb or the Iomega controller.

If your drive behaves like one above, I suggest you send your hard drive to data recovery companies.

My computer refuses to recognize the external hard drive what do i do

Hello there,

What type of OS are you running ( Windows # )

What type of motherboard

Here is what i would do to start off with,

STEP ONE - Check all connections
  1. Unplug the USB data cable from the drive and the computer.
  2. Check the ends of the USB data cable to ensure that they are not damaged.
  3. Reconnect the USB data cable to the drive and the computer. Check the connections to ensure that they are secure.

Note: If you have a Portable Hard Drive with a 2-line USB/power cable, connect both the data line and the supplemental power line (usually marked with a lightning bolt icon) to USB ports on the computer. If the status light on the drive glows steadily, the drive is receiving power. Go to step E.
  4. If you are connecting an Iomega Desktop Hard Drive, check the power supply connections to the drive and power outlet to ensure that they are secure.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Double click the Computer or My Computer to see if the Iomega Hard Drive is detected.

If the Iomega Hard Drive is detected, you can now use the drive.

If the Iomega Hard Drive is not detected, please try another USB cable and/or power supply (if available). If the Iomega Hard Drive is still not detected, continue with the next step.

if that doesn't work go to this helpful site and follow the Steps one by one to fix this problem

I plug in my hard drive to the USB port, but the computer/USB port wont detect it. This happens on multiple computers

henryhan20, OK, good. Plug both of them in when using the external hard drive. The USB plugs supply power to the device as well as serve as a means to transfer the data. USB ports can carry 5 volts of power (max). If the hard drive is over 4200 RPMs then it will most likely need more than 5 volts to work properly. Try plugging both USB jacks in concurrently.
Hope this helps,
Mark

I bought this 1 iomega white external drive to back up my pictures, Now the computer is not detecting it, i have already plug it in another computer and Nothing, I have very valuables pictures inthere and...

Disassemble the casing, and disconnect the USB-to-disk-drive adapter from the disk-drive.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some computer. If you are "lucky", the computer will detect the drive. If you are "unlucky", search online for "Data Recovery Service" -- these are high-cost services that can disasemble your disk-drive, repair it just long enough to copy your files onto another disk-drive (or DVD-writable media).
