I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 Notebook running WindowsXP with a DVD-RW/CD-RW drive. When I insert a DVD to play or to copy it won't work, it tells me I need a DVD decoder. How can I get one to solve this problem.

It tells me I need Media Messenger

  • g_wessely Oct 04, 2010

Windows Media player gives me the message: unable to open messenger, make sure Window Messenger is installed.
Another message I get is: compattible DVD decoder is missing.
How do I get these two? I do not want to install non-window programs nor 30 day trial programs.

  • g_wessely Oct 04, 2010

Media Center is asking for "Window Messenger"

  • g_wessely Oct 05, 2010

I can copy and burn CD's I tried to copy DVD's but I can't. I can't open it sais your disc is blank. So I can't play or copy it. I works on a friend's laptop.

  • g_wessely Oct 05, 2010

I am trying to play a DVD and also copy it which requires burning. I have tried it with Windows Media Player 10 and with SONIC Solutions 7

  • g_wessely Oct 05, 2010

I installed Power DVD, it opens the disc but the sound is just awful, sort of wavy, useless. You ask if I have a DVD player, isn't there one included in Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center?

  • g_wessely Oct 06, 2010

I tried to download K-lite mega codex pack. It will not install. I get the message "setup files are corrupted, try a new copy of the program. Have not yet installed the VLC player

  • g_wessely Oct 06, 2010

I installed K-lite mega codec pack 6.4 full. I got the Video running with Windows Media Player but the sound is bearly audible, breaking up, jerky, scratchy very low volume. I have not installed the registry cleaner, I am afraid to mess with the registry

  • g_wessely Oct 06, 2010

    I ran dxdiag

    Direct music: all tests successful

    Display: No problems found

    direct dr.. successful

    direct3d 7 successful

    direct3d 8 successful

Now I could not get in the Internet anymore. This message was written from my second computer

Please confirm here for me before I help you with this problem (I am sure we can get this solved) - this is a DVD Movie you are trying to watch, is that correct? Have you been able to burn cd's / dvd's without issue with this drive?

Pleas let me know, and I will immediately get back to you and help you further,

Wait I'm confused, so are you trying to play a DVD and it won't work, or burn a DVD and it won't work... or both? What are you trying to use to burn the DVD if that's the case? What software I mean...

    Thanks
    Tim

  • Tim Grayson
    Tim Grayson Oct 05, 2010

Ok, so you can't play OR burn a DVD... So for example if you put a retail (non-burned) DVD movie in the drive, you can't play it at all, correct? Do you have any DVD player software on the machine? PowerDVD for example..? If not that is definitely part of the problem.

Let me know, do you have any dvd software on there?

    Thanks
    Tim

Please if possible come back to the question here and rate it 4 thumbs. It looks like the answer helped you, but for some reason it doesn't rate it 4 thumbs unless you come back a second time and specify 4 out of 4 thumbs. I hope you will do this for me.

    Thanks

Some blank DVD's will not work in different optical drives. Try a different brand of blank DVD and see if it will copy

  • Anonymous Oct 05, 2010

A lot of drives cannot copy DVD R. Try using a DVD-R blank disc instead

Hi,
Just download FFDShow and VLC MEDIA PLAYER.
Its extremely rare with this combination, to find a movie that wouldn't play,

get FFDShow here http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=5550&s=50
with ffdshow all you need to do is to run the setup file and click next repeatedly untill the setup is complete, and then just finish it, close it and its done, works on the background when movies are played.

vlc media player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

After you got these two installed, you should be able to play most if not all of the movies out there.

open vlc media player and then click File, dvd movie.

Is there any codec pack installed on your computer? or do you have any fully packed multimedia player installed? like VLC Player or Gom Player....

First download and install the [K-lite mega codec pack], you may be prompted to configure the settings, just ignore and finish the installation, after it's completed, restart your computer and play the DVD again. Hopefully that should work.

If this doesn't fix, download VLC Media Player and install it, play the DVD with the VLC player and try again. (click here to download VLC player).

Let me know if the problem persists. We need to clean the registry entries.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

I am sorry for the delay. Well there must be other issue with your system like registry or driver conflict or software conflict etc..etc.. I can't make sure right now since I haven't tried..........

Try another KliteMegaCodecPack (click here), Open the link and download any one from the available lists.

It's also important to uninstall all other media player like Power DVD, etc..etc.. except the Windows Media Player.

I would also suggest you to run a system cleaning and a registry cleaning. I don't know whether have any system Utility software like Tuneup or Ccleaner or etc..etc.. You can download Ccleaner from here (click here), this is a freeware, once you open the link, you will see donation page with papay, visa, mastercard...etc..etc.. logos, just below the logos, you'll see two links in Pale Green color, click "Download file from piriform.com" and download the software, install it. Simply click "Next", or "Yes" or "Ok" or "finish", don't configure anything if you are asked/prompted.

Once it's installed, open the program and click "Run Cleaner" (note: if you've downloaded files saved on internet explorer download folder, please move them to other directory or folder, otherwise you'll loose everything downloaded using your Internet Explorer). During the cleaner running process, if you are asked with a warning, just proceed forward providing positive inputs.

Again click "Registry" and then "Scan for issues" and after the scanning is done, click "Fix all selected issues" > "No" > "Fix all selected issues", "close".

Run the Registry cleaner twice or thrice, and do the same with the Cleaner as well.

Restart your computer and install the Klite Mega Codec Pack or if it wasn't downloaded yet, try again.

Let me know if you have problem.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for using FixYa.

You don't need to afraid of the Registry entries, it'll not delete important entries, only the junks and unused entries will be deleted. Please try again.

And let me know the dxdiag result. Type in dxdiag in the run box, a new windows will open up, let me know the following informations..

    • Display

    • Sound

    • Music

    Good luck.

Well, I hope we are closing, but I don't understand when you say you could no longer access the net from the computer. Please clarify.

"Your sound card does not support hardware buffering...." means that your sound card doesn't support 22 050Hz Audio Sampling Rate. It'll not hamper or cause anything. If I am right, your system has VIA.... sound card/codec integrated on the motherboard.

This time, you need to uninstall the sound drivers, graphics drivers and run the registry cleaner so that corrupted or unused entries would be cleaned from the system. Restart your computer and reinstall both the drivers.

    Once again, Good luck.

You can do this yourself
Insert the disk into a working computer's CD drive and copy the folders onto an USB flash drive, then insert the USB flash drive into your Toshiba and copy the folders off the USB flash drive onto your Toshiba.

My burner will not burn cd's anymore. It still plays cd's fine as well as play and burn dvd's fine. I see no errors in hardware setup. It is a nec dvd +- RW ND 6650A that came with my Dell Inspiron E1705.

The CD Burner / Player / DVD Burner are all different heads. If the Dell Inspiron E1705 is an older model it is most likely you have reached the end of it's usable life for the CD burner part. If it is new the CD burner is most likely defective and hopefully warrantied. Otherwise these CD/DVD units can be replaced relatively inexpensively (as compared to buying a new laptop).

0F00:136C IDE device failed:blank media or no media is present in optical drive

read failure of the CD\DVD drive. If you were running diagnostics and have no readable media in the drive, that is a NORMAL result.
If you have readable media in the drive, try reseating the drive and try to read again. If the media is not a factory burned CD, try a factory burned one.
See if you can boot to an Windows CD.
If all the above fail, then likely a drive failure, replace the drive

do check if dvd-rw drive supports the dvd you want to burn to ( either dvd+ or dvd- !)and do use a freeware burnprobgram like burnatonce instead of the build-in windows one...
burnatonce will tell you all about your drive (see tools - device info) and the disc you've put in!

When i try to copy dvd it keeps telling me to insert blank disc even though one is in there i can burn cds but not dvd it tells me to put in writeable disk and ive put in dvdr-w and dvd-r and still it...

Go to the device manager to insure your optical drive is in fact a DVD/RW. You should also be able to tell by looking at the front of the drive and see what it says. If it says CD Writable or DVD Rom, you cannot do it. Kind of sounds like you have a CD/RW-DVD Rom combination drive, which does not allow the burning of DVD's.

Let me know, OK.
