SOURCE: need owner's and service manuals for John Deere Model 317/

First off, Mowerman's response was incorrect about the age of a JD 317.  They were made from 1979 to 1982.
You can only get manuals either through here:  http://techpubs.deere.com/deere/Default.aspx  or from a dealer.  They're expensive.  You can find them on ebay and also here: http://www.ssbtractor.com/tractor_manual_display.cgi?m=John%20Deere&o=317%20Hydrostatic but I haven't used that site.

John Deere 318. Why won't shifter move from neutral?

the dash is notched were the neutral posisition is , this notch (shift lever needs moved out of notch) is there for two reasons , the one you need to be concerned about is the clutch disconnect , this makes it impossible to shift into any direction without clutch pedal down , sometimes this lever will become bent and not press far enough for release arm of shift lever to allow its movement

love these little tractors , they got all the features of a bigger machine but with the size ease of a compact machine , for a small farm or big home garden there's nothing this machine cant do with the right attachments on it I sure wish JD still made em !

Where is the fusible link in a John Deere LX 255 lawnmower?

First thing to check is make sure you blade switch is in off position, brake/clutch is down and locked. There is a 20amp fuse in a fuse holder by the battery in engine compartment. Is it not turning over or not starting?

The drive belt may be broken, or it may have slipped off a pulley.

No spark to the plug Kohler 8hp lawnmower engine

Check ingition switch, check battery voltage 12-12 1/2 volts, check in run position same voltage, check in start position same voltage
We've check switch first. If not problem we've check the points for proper voltage and opening and closing.

Brake pedals are stuck down and cant be moved....

Will need the model number for best results, but insure that your parking brake lever is not still engaged. Typically a lever on or below the "dash". You would need to depress the foot brake and at the same time, release the parking brake handle.

Mowing right along and suddenly the tractor won't go move

it's 1 of 5 likely things
The drive belt from the engine to the transaxle is totally slipping or broken
The linkage from the control pedal to the transaxle is faulty.
The transaxle is broken (not user fixable)
The by-pass rod is pulled out
The brake pedal is pushed or the linkage is stuck in the "brake" position.

The parking brake on my John Deere L118 is stuck in the activated position. Therefore the tractor won't roll. How can I disengage the parking brake?

Usually there is a red handle under the steering colunm that locks the pedal down. You will need to depress the brake as you push down on the red handle which should release it.

Parking Brake Lever (Orange Plastic Lever on left side) is stuck

The parking break is associated with your foot break. Depress the foot break ALL THE WAY down, then you will find that your parking break can be pulled all the way up.
