The volume works fine if I put it in smart sound...I didn't have any problems until I played a dvd on it and why doesn't it turn off? I know the volume button is working and there is some other reason that the volume goes up and the tv will not turn off!

I would suggest to check the volume up button to see if it is stuck, if that is the case the other functions on the TV will not work.
If you can open the TV and use a contact cleaner to spray where those buttons are and see if that fixes it.
If that did not work, you can try to desolder it and install a new one to restore the functionality of your TV

If that is the case with your TV, is more likely the microprocessor that is not providing the proper commands when you do not use the smart mode. The power can not be turn OFF because the microprocessor still dealing with the volume commands being active.

Magnavox old tv wont come on and stay on

I have a similar problem. I recently got a comcast dvr cable box, and after receiving the second box, my tv started going off and coming on all by itself. It may have something to do with the cable. For me, I think the cable box blew, or shorted something in the tv.

60" Projection Tv - Approx 6 yrs old

Your CRT fluid needs to be replaced. After many years the crt cooling fluid gets a ton of alage built up in the tubes.  This will cause the screen to get a halo effect or get darker.

You only need to replace the fluid in the blue and green tubes.

It might be simply a matter of having someone adjust the magnetic rings on the yoke of your picture tube to refocus it - a lost art.

A 15 minute job for a seasoned veteran, perhaps, but expect to pay a minimum charge of 1 hour's labour, at $85-90 CDN.
