If it starts at completely cold to fine tune the high jet adjustment.first off the high speed jet should be initially set at 1 1/2 turns out from lightly bottomed all the way in. next when you do your prestart routine, choke all the way on,primer pumped two times, throttle set at the high speed position, ignition key on,fuel line turned on.(this is my prestartup for my 8hp tecumseh)yours may be slightly different.use whatever starts your machine the easiest! once my machine starts up i can almost immediately turn the choke completely off. i can do that because the high speed jet is opened enough or rich enough for the engine to run.if you adjust the high speed in it will lean the motor out(you found that to be true!) to where it will miss and backfire and eventually quit. start at 1 1/2 turns out and start the engine, once the engine starts if you take the choke off right away use what it does as a guide to high speed adjustment. if the engine quits turn the screw out 1/4 turn and so on.use the very first cold startup as the test for high speed mixture adjustment. at completely cold startup you have the jet adjusted correctly when the engine will sustain itself when you completely take the choke off very shortly after startup. let the amount of choke you need at cold start to keep the engine running be your guide.too lean and the engine will not stay running without the choke at all,too rich and the engine will not pull under extreme loads and will show signs of black soot out the exhaust. you want the jet adjusted so within 5 seconds of cold start the engine will stay running with no choke at all. find that needle setting ( don't ad any more!! ) and you'll be good to go.keep in mind the above is not optimum and is a little rich but you will like the way it starts, stays running, and overall performs as adjusted above.

I would guess one of three things is your problem . 1) is as mentioned by greg_margo is the egr could be stickin or not getting vaccum .2) is the iac ( intack control valve) located n your tbi carb base right rear corner of carb . or your carb base gasket is bad seen this many times with th early 90's caprice weather its a 4.3 5.0 or 5.7litre engine . worked n many of these and still have do as I work for a co. that still has one with over 400,00 mile and still running strong same engine 5.0

Ford focus tdci white smoke problems

What happening is you have a bad head gasket or its starting to go bad. As long a little oil is getting in to cylinders causing that smoke once it warms up that gasket is expanding thus the smoke stops. I would keep an eye on oil levels if it gets milky replace gasket asap. Could also be intake gasket but highly doubt it this sounds like a worn head gasket.

Have a 90 f-250 5.8 gas burner. sat in a warehouse for 2 years. new battery and gas. starts and idles great. run up rpms for 2 minutes and it starts choking out. let off fuel and goes back to idling...

Carburetta is fouled. Run fine on choke - rich mixture. As it warms up and choke pulls off, its starving for gas.
First try adding fuel system cleaner to the gas tank. Do NOT go overboard. No more than double the recommended mix ratio.
The alternative is to remove the carb, open the bowl and spray out the jets and venturi with carb cleaner.

Its possible you may help it by removing the air filter and spraying every orifice you find on top of the carb. With carb cleaner. Be very carefull not to flood, pool carb cleaner in intake as this is not healthy for engine either. You can do this with engine running, so as not to pool, but slowly is best, both in engine speed and volume of carb cleaner.

I would first try draining the carb bowl, if you look at where the choke lever is and look below that you should see a clear red tube with a flat head screw below that, if you just turn the screw out the carb will drain. If you still have an issue you are going to have to clean the carb.

How should I properly cold start a 2003 HD Sportster. Specifically, how long should I choke it? It sputters after having the choke taken off (even after 3 - 4 minutes of choke). The carb has been re-jetted...

Ok, as a general rule, I only run the enricher for as long as I need until I can keep the engine running with the throttle. If you run the engine too long with the enricher, you'll foul the plugs. The enricher is VERY rich.

Your bike is jetted correctly. There is one other thing you could do and that is to take the slide out of the carb. Then remove the needle. Put a 3mm flat washer on the needle from the bottom (long) side. Put it back together. What you are doing is raising the needle by the thickness of the washer, about 0.020". This will richen up the mid-range mixture just a bit. It seems to help.

Now, you don't want your engine to heat up too quickly. If it does, the mixture is too lean and a lean mixture is fine for a water cooled engine but death on an air cooled engine. I usually run my engine until I feel the rocker boxes getting warm. You also don't want to take off and run your engine hard when it's cold. You stand a good chance of blowing a head gasket. As the engine warms up, the cylinder and the heads "grow" due to the heat building up. When the engine is cold, the cylinder and the heads have the least amount of torque on them making blowing a head gasket or a base gasket more likely if you run the engine hard. Be patient and let your engine warm like it should.

Good Luck

First check for any cracked pipes leading into the intake manifold If all OK (with no codes showing it probably is OK) try checking the fuel pressure regulator. If you smell fuel from the pressure regulator vacuum side arm (when the vacuum line has been disconnected) it needs to be replaced.

You should have taken advantage of the warranty when you first noticed the problem. Go to: for an excellent 12 page article on Walbro carburetors--theory and troubleshooting. Note carefully, the caution about the lower chamber gasket and diaphragm positions. Hot running engines imply very lean fuel conditions. Hopefully, you haven't damaged the inner cylinder liner/piston/rings due to excess heat and lack of lubrication. At 50:1 fuel ratio, there isn't much lubrication to spare. Make sure the carburetor fasteners are tight and no plugging of the fuel filter. The head and cylinder are one casting--no head gasket. Try turning both jet screws CW to the stops (lightly), then back out each CCW 1-1/2 turns. This is a basic setting and the engine should start and run. Allow to warm up, then pull the throttle full on--adjust H needle CW until the engine speeds up, but continues to 4-stroke. Proper adjustment is when the engine 4-strokes, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. This produces the most power and least heat. Allow to idle and adjust L CW until the engine runs fairly well, but allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Adjust the idle speed screw to stop the chain from turning, but keeps the engine running. Hope this helps!

Carb popping and spuddering on start ups sometimes.

Cold engine starts and these symptoms are common, cause? Lean running at start thanks to EPA, wait a few minutes until you feel heat in heads of engine, then easy throttle until fully warm.

1998 Chevy Blazer won't start (intermitently)

You will have to find out if it is lacking gas, spark or air first. And here's a tip: Never use ether on a gas engine. That could be the reason it's not starting now. You might be lacking gaskets or valves. Ether... starting fluid is for use on diesel engines only. If you don't know what you're doing on a diesel, you can do more harm than good, and not omnly can you blow your gaskets out, you can blow your head off trying.
