Hi I am running Win XP Pro on my laptop and suddenly have a network issue : - Browser does not connect to any site with URL - Browser works with ip address for the site - nslookup works with name & ip address - ping works with ip addressbut not host name - tracert works with ip address but not host name - Problem same for wireless as well as wired connection Seems like a DNS name resolution issue. Can you please help.

I know it is not a problem with ISP or router because another computer on the same network is working fine.

  • rvs_narayana Oct 03, 2010

As mentioned before, my system is completely offline and cannot download and install the tool. I am looking for any troubleshooting tips than the generic suggestions (such as reinstalling OS) . Can anyone help ?

Contacting ISP does not help. They have reset the modem and I see non-192.168.x.x address on both laptops. They asked me to contact laptop manufacturer.

I removed wireless router and connected directly, but the problem still persists except that it has a different IP now. As I said before, another laptop works fine with or without wireless router.

Contacted ISP but no help. They have reset the modem and I have removed the wireless router and connecting diretly to the ISP's cablemodem.
    Problem still exisits.

I have few queries regarding your network problem.
1. Have you tried setting up a new connection?
2.Have you checked the DNS server (if it's hosted on a dedicated server).
3. Is the laptop connected directly to a router/switch or directly to the IPS DSL Line?

4. Is it wireless connection or Wired?

5. If it's connected through the ICS, then is it properly configured? Including the DNS Server, Domain Name, etc..

6. Can you ping the Server if it's connected to a server?

and many more.

If you can configure the network setup yourself, then delete the current connection and set up a new connection after restarting your computer.

Check the DNS server and make sure it's properly configured and running without any restrictions. The best option is to run the "nslookup" command from your laptop. If it's successful. You can also verify the DNS suffix. Also verify the DNS server settings.

Release and Renew the DHCP from the DHCP server.

Run the Commands ipconfig/Release and ipconfig/Renew and then ipconfig/all, now check the ipconfig/all result.

Make sure that only one connection type is enabled, suppose if you are connecting wirelessly, disable the wired Lan and try again.

Restart DNS services on the DNS server or Reboot if necessary.

Don't forget to restart your computer every time you make the changes.
And many more..

It would be helpful if you can let me know the result displayed on the browser when you try to access a url/website.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Take this link to Your Model Downloads & Updates Webpage. Choose your Exact Model & Operating System from the drop down menus. That will bring up Any/All Current Updates for Your Laptop. I recommend that you install All the Current Updates listed for your Model/OS.(including the BIOS update) That should take care of your issue. Here is the link:

Yes, this is a DNS problem - most likely the DNS server is down.
Simple test: boot from a Linux Live-cd and try to connect using one of the browsers from there - if it's the same then the problem is at your ISP and all you can do is call them.
If in the Linux you can connect then the problem is in your XP, something has got wrong in the firewall. This is usually a sign of malware infection and the only sure way to clean something like that is to reinstall.

The ip address conflict is likely caused by a manual IP address that is entered into the printer that is overlapping with an automatic address that your router is giving out. Either switch your printer to DHCP so it gets an automatic address, or reserve the address in the router's DHCP list or pick a manual address to assign that is outside of the range of the DHCP server. Most router will start at address XXX.XXX.XXX.100 so if you pick an address between 20 and 40 then you should not have any more issues with conflicts.

Hi Kathryn, it may just be that facebook's servers are overloaded or some wider-network issue so your PC cant establish a connection with facebooks servers. Perhaps you can just wait for a few hours or try again tomorrow to see if there are any changes.
In the meantime, try downloading any updates for your browser (I suggest using Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome over Internet Explorer) and then try again. It may just be a browser issue that gets in an endless loop trying to load some parts of Facebook's page, and an update of the browser should fix the problem.

Asus 802.11 a/b/g wireless adapter problem

The problem could be with the wireless network that you are trying to access, or it has something to do with you wireless card tcp/ip protocol.

where you using the same computer now, when you had this issue with the vista? or is this win XP pc that you have now is a different computer?

if you are getting limited or no connectivity, that means that the access point (wireless signal) is not giving you a valid IP address.

you can try to add static to your IP settings, but this will only work if you knew the IP range of that network that you are trying to access.

please provide more info

Belkin Parallel AutoSwitch F1U115E

Please advise of further info. All the connected PC's are running on XP. One is not connecting to the network. Sounds like the "Local Area Network" setting needs to be set for "Automatically assign an IP". Go to the start menu, select "Run" and type in "CMD". Type "IPCONFIG" and enter. This will display your network setting and IP address. If there is no IP address, then you will enever have a connection. If the IP address is listed, it will display a unique IP address, a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and the ip address of the gateway. Please respond with any further.
