Hi!
I would guess that the actual situation is that you have 5 partitions on the HDD, but only one of them is allocated and formatted.
With that said, all you need to do is format the other 4 partitions/free spaces through Disk Manager:

  • Right click on My Computer (or Computer on Windows Vista/7) and choose Manage.
  • Click on Disk Management.
  • Right click the partitions/free spaces the computer doesn't "see" and format them/create new partitions (accordingly).
For more information, look here, and don't hesitate to consult me if you have any further questions!

Best regards,
Pelu.

replace the hard drive with a solid state hard drive as it is failing
while you have it partitioned , that is only 2 sections on the one disc and if the hard drive is failing , regardless of of the partitions , it will not read right
If you will , consider partitions as different tracks on an album and if the player is broken then none of the tracks will play properly

I cannot partition all of my Seagate 3GB HDD.

If this hard disk came with your new computer or laptop then the hard drive may have a small 2nd restore partition. This partition is not for normal use, it is only used to fix your computer/laptop if you need to restore it back to the Out of the Box condition.
You can use Disk manager to wipe this restore partition and create a data 745.52Gb data partition. I would not recommend you do this as you need the keep this restore partition if something happens to destroy your Windows 7 operating system.

I bought today a lacie hard disk 500GB and instead of 500GB has only 9.99 MB space. What's the problem?

Sounds like your have a 9.99mb partition on your drive with the rest being free space.

If you are running windows goto the Computer Management program and check under storage> disk management to see if your 500gb drive is there. if it is delete the existing partitions and reformat the entire disk to NTFS

I have converted my wd passport 500 gb to the ex fat format and tried to use it on a windows xp operating system earlier and it said that the hardrive was not formatted! what can i do to sort out this...

I'm not sure that XP can even see HDD's which are bigger than 120Gb.

I'd try connecting again to a Linux, Vista or Win7 pc and create at least one partition, about 80Gb with the NTFS file system, see how that works. If good, just create 5 more partitons 80Gb or less.

If you'd like to try some partitioning software there's Partition Master at:-

Its freeware.

Not able to detect the disk

We're going to need more information to troubleshoot, but if it's a new drive that's never been set up follow the instructions below. If these instructions aren't helpful, then please post back with more info and I'll help you further.

Your external hard drive likely has no partitions so Windows has no drive to mount. Follow these steps to create and format a partition for your external hard drive.

1. Press Win+R to open the Run command.
2. Type "Control" into the dialog box.
3. Double-click "Administrative Tools."
4. Double-click "Computer Management."
5. Select "Disk Management" under Storage.
6. Find the 250 GB External Hard drive in the right pane.
7. Right click on the drive and select "Create new partition".
8. After the partition is created you will need to format the partition.
9. Format the partition as NTFS unless you plan on booting off the hard drive, in which case format the partition as FAT32. You can also create multiple partitions if you want.
10. Enter My Computer and you will now see your external hard drive.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa.

Not show drive on my computer panel

Hi,
Check if you hard drive is listed in Device Manager (System properties->Hardware->Device..) at Disk drives section (press + to list drives). If you can see 2 hard drives (I suppose the Quantum is the 2nd hdd in your pc) then maybe you should create a partition on it and format the new partition (you can do that from Disk Management section of Computer Management (Control panel ->Administrative tools -> Computer Management). If your hard drive is not listed in Device manager then it's not correctly connected or it's damaged (or, as I remember in a few cases this model was not compatible with some types of mainboards).

If this is the solution for your problem, please rate my post, otherwise give us more details.

Regards,
Andras

External 500gb hard drive not readable

Check the partition size in Disk Management (if running Win7 - download a free Partition Manager if not) and see if the system is seeing the partition correctly. Seagate has recovery software available on their website but you may just have to repartition and reformat.

Seagate barracuda external 500 gb hard drive usb not seen any longer, cables and power okay , tried on three computers

Verify what Drives have been detected by your Operating System by using Windows: Control Panel -> Admistrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management -> Your Hard disk(s) will be displayed with all existing partitions and any assigned drive letters.
Your external (or internal) drive must be recognized as having formatted partitions that have a drive letter assigned to each required partition.
Hope it helps: let me know how you go!
