Whent the key will not turn, take the shifter out of park and slam it back into park. Generally when the key will not turn, the car is not completely in park. This sloppy condition can be caused by a transmission that needs to have it's bands tightened, or a worn key or a worn ignition switch. J.

I had same problem in a Honda Accord. The steering would get locked tight and I could not turn the key. My solution was to grab the steering wheel and tried to turn it. That freed up the steering wheel and I was able to start car. Would occur every now & then.

Have you tried wiggling the steering wheel? I have a 2005 and mine does that sometimes, but I wiggle the steering wheel back and forth and finally the key starts the car.

Try turning the steering wheel left and right rapidly while turning the key to get it started.

2004 crossfire...turn key..no start..no sound..all lights work..try maybe 3 times ..it starts..intermittant problem

The lights are on their own personal circuit from the starter. Every time you turn the key on the connections are getting warmer each time. You state after the 3rd time it will start. You will need to check all connections to make sure they are very clean and tight. A loose or corroded connection will cause a problem such as yours

The key will go in but i can't turn it

When you put the key into the ignition, grab the steering wheel at the same time and turn it one direction or the other and then turn the ignition key to unlock the ignition

My 2004 crossfire's key won't turn in the ignition, why?

I had the same problem. I had to replace the entire ignition module at my cost. It happens fast, first just sticks when turning, then a day or two later, it will lock. If you jiggle the steering wheel it will sometimes free the lock and you can turn the ignition. Just a poor design. The only way to get the ignition cylinder out is to turn the key to the on position (there are write ups on this on the internet). Most of the time that is not possible and you are stuck somewhere with no way to turn on your car. If you are able to do that do not turn the key off completely or it will probably never turn on again. Just leave it in the ACC setting until you figure out what you want to do. It is not that difficult to take the entire lock cylinder out and start the car with just the key tip that fits in the ignition slot (or a screwdriver if you have one). The only problem is that the key has a built in RFID sensor that needs to be within a few inches of the plastic piece around the key cylinder for the car to start, so even if you do that you have to find a place to stick the key to the dash right next to the ignition. Just take it to the dealer and have them fix it.

It is a very common problem and these wear out after use. A plastic actuator pushing a metal pin to unlock the key cylinder... it will be a replacement part and repair for Chrysler forever. At $525+ per repair it should be a recall, and it will happen to every crossfire owner. Mine went out at ~39,500 miles and I know it will again sometime in the car's life.

The other option is to drill out the steering wheel lock, much more difficult and extremely hard to get to under the dash. That would solve the problem forever, but most of us don't like dismantling our car's ignition and drilling into things that should not be taken apart.

Good Luck. Check out www.crossfireforum.org for other options, but everyone has had this problem.

Key won't turn in ignition

The lock cylinder in the steering column has to be changed. I have see these wear out.

To avoid having a new key combination for the ignition, when you go to the dealer and order new part, tell them that you want to have it in the same combination code as the original. You will have to loan them a copy of the key to have this done.

The last step is you will need someone who knows how to change the cylinder in the steering column. In many models of cars, this is an involved job.
