Dell c640 wont start up by pressing power button on battery power but will start on ac power and will remain on using ac power and when unplugged using battery power. System diagnostics indicates lcd inverter failure. Why wont laptop come on using good battery by itself?

Yes you can still use it without the battery. Of course you will need a battery replacement to surf without AC power.

Screen wont turn on. Laptop is on but screen remains black...... padlock with 9 on it is flashing

Hi bernmurphy,

The easiest way to fix this problem is to perform a power drain. Please follow the instructions below.

1. Turn off the system completely.

2. Unplug the AC adapter from the power outlet.

3. Remove the battery from the unit.

4. Now, press and hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds.

5. Put back the battery in and plug the AC adapter.

6. Reboot and observe the system.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

The power supply to my c640 has a green light that flashes when plugged into the laptop, if i unplug it from the laptop, the light stays steady and green, do i have aproblem, the laptop will not power up...

Is the battery charging when you plug the power supply? If not, while the battery and the power supply is plugged in go to BIOS, that will be F2 when your computer boots up, from there check on battery health or battery info you will also see the ac adapter if it's detected if it says unknown try to use another ac adapter if it is detected still try to use another adapter. If you still have the same problem after trying a new one. You'll need to replace the motherboard

New battery and still won't charge.

first, check that the battery connection isn't blocked by a sticker or something.
second: try disconnecting the battery and ac and hold the power button for 1 minute. then give the battery and ac another try.

let us know how it goes.

if it still doesn't work, time for a warranty replacement.

No power

Unplug All External Devices Unplug the AC Adapter From the Wall Outlet. Disconnect the AC Adapter From the Laptop Reseated the power cable to the adapter.
Remove the Battery Connect the AC Adapter Directly to a Known Good Outlet, But Not to the Computer Verify That the AC Power Adapter Has a Solid Green or Blue Light.
The AC adapter status light is solid green. The AC adapter status light is solid green.Press the Power Button and Check for POST. Post means if you see the dell logo, remove the battery, plug the ac if still it wont turn on or doesnt have any light,Reseat the Memory if after reseatting the memory still the same problem it might be a bad motherboard.

Power/battery problem

just log on to support.dell.com
click on drivers and download
punchin your system's servica tag
download BIOS updates
but it will only be done if ac adapter and battery are both connected if its not
than it could be an issue with the systemboard and will be replaced if you live in US call 1-800-624-9896(DELL)
