Question about GPS

1 Answer

My Garmin Nuvi (I see no model number on it..have had it about 4 years) has a touch screen that has become increasingly unresponsive. It seems to work when cold but as soon as it warms up a bit (in the sun on the windshield) it quits. Now I can't get it to work at all. I took the back off and unplugged and replugged the two connections that were immediately obvious and that made no difference? Do you have any suggestions, or what would be the approximate cost to repair if it's just a matter of "knowing what to whack and how hard"? Thanks Jim

You can try to make a reset ..and see how it behaves after ....Take a look on this page and see these methods of reset
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/09/how-to-reset-garmin-nuvi-gps-device-access-maintenance-mode/
about how it will cost if it is getting to fix something physical on it ..I can not estimate ..but if it is that old..I guess the parts and the manual work will cost enough to make you go for a new one if this will not make the job done anymore..

Touch screen is defective. seems to have dimple under the face and when you push is indents, but not responsive

If there is physical damage to the touchscreen, then it can become unresponsive and will need to be replaced. The touchscreen is bonded to the glass (they are one piece), so both the touchscreen & glass will need to be replaced, even though the glass may not be cracked. Please see this link for more information and how to have the touchscreen replaced for you.

My Nuvi 650 screen reads "The following map data is more than a year oldand should be updated. When I touch the "OK" on the screen, nothing happens, it seems the screen has become unresponsive.

I would suggest some caution here. I have noticed a trend in anything that can be updated by the consumer---they just blindly do it and I have also seen as the result of this dozens of units crash and burn---if you have not issues and the unit functions why risk losing it?

Turn this unit off and see later if turned on it functions or not, failing that the only way out of the mess would be a call to the maker.

Don't just blindly say ok, kind of like getting a email with a virus and saying OK.

I have a Garmin 885 the sceen does not work. touch keys do not work. I cannot get past the Garmin start up when plugged in . when I unplug it I get the warning page and select ok and get pge with wheree ti...

I recommend attempting a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 885.
Then I would upgrade the system software to the latest version. This often brings back unresponsive Nuvis.

Perform the Hard Reset
  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  3. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?"prompt appears.
  4. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot.
Upgrade the System Software

The upgrade software is a download available from Garmin. Installation steps are detailed here.

I hope that helps.

My garmin nuvi 670 touch screen is not calibrated

Have you tried using the screen calibration command? Press the Wrench symbol, then the Display symbol and then Calibrate screen. Press the dots as it tells you to and you should now have a calibrated touchscreen.
