Question about Garmin GPS Devices

1 Answer

Garmin Etrex vista will not interface with PC, after conecting it with micro sd card for first time, xp said new hardware not installed correctly, Garmin unit then rebooted itself & erased all my user data in its memory, tracks & waypoints, have them on my computer from previous dta transfer without the card in, but can't upload or communicate at all with the unit as windows & Mapsource won't recognise it. The gps unit appears to have reset to factory defaults all by itself & seems to be working ok. Tried reinstalling Garmin software on PC, tried system restore to reset usb driver problems, no success. Any help would be great. Have emailed Garmin but no response yet.

Tried all of the above, had some unexpected side effects, solved those. Unfortunately GPS device is not recognised still & is not recognised by my laptop either. Will have to send it back to manufacturer for repair.
    Thanks for your advice.

HI,

Since the problem is the PC not recognizing the device. Please try out these steps:

Try connecting your device to another USB port. Using one port all the time to connect and disconnect USB items a port can develop a range of files associated with configuring the USB connection. Some of these files might actually have been from your device connected before, or some of these configurations could be from other USB items you connect to this port. Changing ports can often lead to an immediate good connection simply because ther are no conflicting configuration files. If this does not solve your problem, we can now entertain the next process to try.
coolguy008: THIS IS A BIG ONE. This is the last thing to do. Before you try this process, please complete a full back up of your system. This is important as the next step can have side effects you did not entirely expect. AND Second, you might need your Vi Install Disk (not in all cases). What this process is about is renewing all hardware/software configurations relating to USB connections.

Here is what you do:
1. Right click MY COMPUTER
2. Select PROPERTIES
3. Select HARDWARE
4. Select DEVICE MANAGER
5. Select UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS
6. Right click on each USB CONTROLLER and select Uninstall
7. Uninstall all entries
8. Reboot your computer
9. As your computer re-boots it will reinstall all USB connections it detects

THEN, when all other USB items have been configured and connected by the system, you then should try connecting your USB device

If these suggestions are implemented and you are still have connection difficulties with your computer, there are several other things to try. If you have another XP Computer you should try connecting your device to another computer to see if the problem is a device problem or not. If it still has this problem with the next computer, it maybe be a fault of the device.

IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED ALL the above mentioned and still have a problem, you should next contact the seller of this machine for further instructions of what to do next.

Goodluck..

My etrex vista cx will not turn on- new batteries installed

as its new, it would be unwise to fiddle around with it. Return it for exchange,
Before you do though make sure that the batteries are good and have been inserted in the correct polarity.

Etrex Vista is a very robust unit and most reliable generally, so this is unusual.

Please rate my help++++Thanks fo using FIXYA

The Main Menu on my Garmin eTrex Legend HCx has mostly disappeared. The only icons left are Mark, Setup, Proximity, Games. I've tried removing the batteries for a while, but that doesn't do anything....

Have you tried re-seating your micro-SD card to see if that clears up the problem? Sometimes the card unseats itself and the map data loss causes some of the icons to disappear. Reinsert the card, restart the unit and see if this fixes the problem. If not, come back and tell us and we'll see what else it might be.

How do I install maps from the Garmin US Topo 100K to my Garmin Etrex Vista HCx? I've put in a microSD card, then what?

You need to install the map software on your PC. From there, using the map select tool, select the maps you want to add to your GS unit and then send them to the microSD card which will show up in the SEND window.

Long beep when turning off

I had the same problem with the etrex Vista. The problem was that my Mac stored hidden files on the Micro SD card and those cause the beep. If you delete the hidden files e.g. with Tinker Tool then you Garmin will work fine again.

Cant view map on gps

When you go past 4gigs on a micro SD card it becomes HC (high capacity I believe) and will not work with most Garmins. The 2 gig's the limit.

Cannot install new Garmin eTrex Vista HCx to my PC

The driver file should be in a folder called USB_Drivers on the Trip & Waypoint Manager CD. The install process is confusing - it looks like it has to install twice as after the first time it looks for the file again - carry through with this the 2nd time and you should be fine. I have had to reinstall the driver several times over the last few years - also when using a different USB port. So now I keep the driver file handy on the hard drive to save getting the CD every time.

Garmin etrex hxc gps adding m,ore map detail.

You will need to use Mapsource to transfer the maps to your GPSr unit. This should install when you install the Topo Britain program.

You will then choose which map segments you want to transfer, and the program will do the rest.
