I had service on this set many times over the years as I had a service contract that included service each year. The tech always opened the set from the front, I never really paid any attention how he did it. The model # is RL 8544AK08. Bought the TV in 1992 and it is still working fine except the picture has become dull.Mirror has not been clean in 4 or 5 years.

I know for sure that the front of the TV was removed. I know that the mirror is located in front of the color lights because they added fluid to one of the lights and he gained access to the lights and mirror from the front. The tech even showed us how to clean the mirror and then he replaced the front of the TV. I can not remember if it was the front where the speaker cloth is or if it was the screen itself.

Magnavox 42" projection TV. Model # RL8544AK08 serial # 83612262. Purchased 1992. I need to know how to remove the front of my set so that I may clean the mirror. Over the years I have had service on this set and the tech always removed the front to clean the mirror. However, I never really watched him do the removal, and so now that I no longer carry a service contract on the set I need to do the cleaning myself because the picture has become dull.

None of these suggestion were helpful. My husband figured how to remove the front screen of the TV.

Uhmmmm..well..I understand that this may sound ok..but in my experience this is NOT the best approach..in fact, may be contributing to the fuzziness, no?

You should remove the back of the TV where the mirror is located to get access to the front screen.
If you could give the model number of your TV to see if I can find a service manual.

You do not need to remove the front part of your TV to clean te mirror but the back is the one that needs to be remove.

  • Jaime Hernandez May 28, 2008

Have you checked for some screws at the back of your TV, where the mirror is mounted and take them out. If you say the front part came out before; those screws are holding the front bezel of your TV.

    Try it.

MIRRORS NEED CLEANING

Remove the cover around the front screen...this is the best way to get to the mirror. You may need a service manual if you can't figure it out how to get it off...but in most cases the trim will snap off.

The picture is dull, what i have to do for the TV?

The usual cause of the DLP's geeting dull is the front small projection mirror gets dusty and needs cleaning. The mirror is located dead center in the front after removing the screen assembly. Its a small mirror directly in front of the lens assembly of the light engine.

I need to clean mirror

Most rear projection sets the screen will pop off the front. Usually a couple of hidden catches. Get another person for this.
Once off you can clean the mirror but not the inside of the screen.
Unplug tv first

Blurry picture

You need to clean the projector lens on the optical engine using a soft cotton or, better yet, a chamois cloth. Also clean the mirror mounted inside the rear cabinet and also the front and rear of the screen itself.
If picture is still blurred then your the optical engine is most probably defective.

Cleaning Optical Block

Sorry to be teh bearer of bad news, but the optical block (light engine) can not be dis-asembled outside of a cleanroom. You can remove the rear cover of the set and clean the mirrors and glass. That may help, but usually these typesd of symptoms are an indication that the light engine is starting to fail. The light engine can be replaced by you if you feel comfortable. The part is still available.
