Question about Computers & Internet

3 Answers

I have 60 GB of files produced by Norton Anti-Virus quarantining Trojans from a time when I either had a virus that was producing them like mad (sometimes 30 a minute) or I was under attack from outside. I can't get rid of them because when I upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7, they (along with everything else got put in a file called windows.old, and NAV can't find them. Neither than I. The first question I have (and when I gets answered I will have others) is, "What is the file extension for NAV quarantine files? Your help would be appreciated.

I know it is going to be difficult, but I don't think it is more trouble than it's worth. I need to save windows.old. If I knew the file extension used by NAV for the quarantine files, I'd give deleting the files a try. I have tried Googling, the Norton solution database, and the Norton forum to get the information but so far have had no luck. That's why I am turning to FixYa. Can you tell me what the file extension is, or tell me how to find out?

    Thanks.

Thank you very much for the perfect solution! I was using something called Primitive File Size Chart on the machine when it was running Vista. That's how I discovered the quarantine files in the first place, but it crashes when I try to use it with windows 7. WinDirStat is just the ticket. I found the files and deleted them. The file extension is VBN.

Hello.

You can use windirstat to locate where the 60gb is being stored exactly and what is using it.

Please do not be afraid of deleting anything in windows.old folder, as it does not affect or is not being used by the computer at all, its only stored incase you had important files that might have been left behind.

http://download.cnet.com/WinDirStat/3000-2248_4-10614593.html

the extension of the files could be VIR. or the original filename and its extension with the last letter changed to _ or similar.

If I got on the computer myself I could find out.

When you get a bad virus infection, the best solution is not to upgrade Windows but to format the hard drive and do a complete fresh Windows install. This is the only sure way to get rid of the infected files. This also means you need you install your programs again.
Before you copy your data back into your computer, I suggest you scan them for virus infections before you copy them to your computer, otherwise you can infect your computer again.
You can still use the Windows 7 upgrade CD to Install Windows but at some stage of the installation, Windows will ask you to insert the old Windows CD in the drive for upgrade verification.

Tracking those down is going to be more of a headache than you could want I would say repartition the hard drive and than reinstall 7
when your going through the installation process choose to delete the partition you have it on now and create a new one to install on this will ensure no software issues can re-accure

hope this helps

How to Allow Something Blocked by Norton Antivirus?

Antivirus programs generally work by finding infected archives as well as assigning them to "quarantine," which basically refrain the access to and from the file. It is the same situation with Norton Antivirus, i.e. you buy a license to set up the program, install it on workstations of your organizations, and it takes care of those computers by ensuring the virus definitions are up-to-date. But somehow, these definitions may sometime catch a file which is not infected. In such a case, you can manually open the quarantine section of the Norton program and restore the file to unblock its access. You can follow the below mentioned steps to do so or even take help, which available on the Norton 360 support number round the clock.
1. First of all, initiate the main window of Norton Anti-Virus program. Here, you need to choose "Tasks," option and then click on the "General Security History" button.
2. Second step would be to click on the "Quarantine" button. Consequently, quarantined list of files would be displayed.
3. Now choose the file in that particular list, after which you need to click on "Options" button. Subsequently the 'Threat Detected' window would be displayed.
4. Lastly, select the "Restore" option so that the file may be unblocked and you could then put it again on your hard drive.
The above mentioned process is simple and easy to follow. You can either do it on your own or if you face any issue regarding the same, you can get in touch with our team of experts on the Norton 360 antivirus support phone number : 1-800-589-0948.

How Norton Antivirus Works

Norton has traditional virus detection method like Signature base and Heuristics base detection, with anti-virus, anti-rootkit, anti-malware, anti-spyware etc. Symantec upgrade and releases new and more improved features with its every release. Signature based detection includes searching for knowing structure within executable code, however your computer can be infected with most new virus which signature is not known. In that case heuristics method can be use it can identify new viruses by variation of such code, in files. Malwares are very difficult to detect even for the most new anti-virus software. If you are using Norton Antivirus, you should update its data-base and virus definition every day, so that when you scan your computer, it can detect all possible threats. Some new features like SONAR, it examines the behaviour of applications to decide whether they are malicious. Various things are checked such as if the program create a desktop shortcut or create add/remove programs entry before determining the program is malicious.

Norton insight is a program that comes with the Norton 360. It improves the speed and quality of computer scan. It identifies well known files of client machine and excludes them from constant monitoring and scanning. It only scans unknown and unsecured files. Skipping the already known files helps the scan more impact.

Norton 360 introduced a very effective tool - Norton Power Eraser, it removes threats which standard anti-virus may miss. It cleans up system where malware prevents anti-virus installation. Apart from these, the key technologies of Norton anti-virus software are anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-rootkit, and pulse-update - provides up-to-the-minute updates that protect against the latest threats without slowing down your computer, firewall software - that can use for mapping and monitoring network.

A Brief History of Norton Anti-virus

Norton anti-virus is a product of Symantec Corporation. Norton anti-virus helps you to remove viruses and malicious codes from your computer, it also protect you from online threats. Symantec programmed and launched various versions of Norton anti-virus to protect your pc and Internet Security to secure your online activities from hackers.

As per history of Norton products, it's about 25 years before Norton antivirus came on the market. The name of the first Norton anti-virus was Norton Commander, released in the year 1986, served as a standard interface for DOS. This version of Norton was invented to protect DOS from malicious programs. Norton Commander was a prototypical orthodox file manager, written by John Socha and released by Peter Norton.

Norton Commander is considered easy to use based on its constant view of two file manipulation objects at once. After starting the program the user sees two panels with file lists. Each panel can be easily configured to show information about the other panel, a directory tree, or a number of other options.

When Symantec acquired Peter Norton Computing from Peter Norton, Norton starts to develop various utilities or applications for DOS, as well as for Windows. Product activation was introduced in Norton anti-virus 2004. Spyware and adware detection and removal tool was introduced to the 2005 version. The redesign main graphical user interface and homepage hijacking protection was released with 2006 version of Norton anti-virus. With the version of 2007 windows 2000 compatibility was dropped and Vista compatibility was introduced, with anti-rootkit technology. Version 2009 and 2010 released with Sonar protection, File Insight, and rogue security software tools. The latest version of Norton anti-virus is 2011, which protect your computer being infected from facebook wall and feed.

Is there a virus that can overide any anti virus product for instance Norton?

the problem with viruses are that they are being produced by hackers at a rate that keeps them ahead of anti-virus products like norton, and the rest
so if norton is not up to date or you have the wrong product ( norton has different levels of protection)it is a possibility that a virus can get through on the back of a e-mail or from face book ( anything that has a link is a potential virus )
from your description, I would be inclined to take it to a second authorized service agent for the laptop and get another opinion as to the problem as I don't think it is a virus but a faulty lap top hard drive ( retail shops seldom have fully qualified technicians for repairs )
remember that the best anti virus protection is you and if you get e-mails or face book messages out of the "blue" regardless of how real it looks , how inviting it is or how demanding it is , always treat it as dangerous and just delete it

I have trojan like which can affect my laptop hack password take out my credit card details.

Have you got an anti-virus program?
If you have did it remove this trojan virus?
If you have not an anti-virus program or the program cannot remove this trojan, then I recommend you format the hard drive and reinstall Windows, the laptop device drivers and your programs.
This is the only sure way to remove such a threat.
Although this is a drastic method, it is better to be sure you do not lose your money to crooks. After installing Windows, install a good quality anti-virus program and keep the virus definition files updated regularly.

Norton Anti-virus will not launch

If you have access to another computer download avast anti-virus and malwarebytes anti-malware and burn to cd or use a flash drive. Malwarebytes will remove that PC Defender rouge anti-virus software and any other malware you may have,

If you don't have another computer you can download the files to try booting into safe mode with networking. This option should allow you to download and install the programs above,

If your able to download them run anti-malware first. Let t fix what it can. Then install avast anti-virus, when asked if you want to schedule a boot time scan say yes, then when asked to reboot say no and open avast and update it, When prompted to reboot do so.

Hope this helps
