Left-click of optical mouse is sticking

The left-click of my Logitech cordless optical notebook mouse (several years old) has recently started acting strange. I'm having trouble highlighting things, and often the click will either stick or mistakenly multiple click. The cursor still moves smoothly. Is there any hope?

Thanks for the help -- I think it worked!

    Same problem, solution didn't work.
Broke my mouse down and poked around. No obvious crud or buildup on the click switch itself, when prodded directly the switch responds crisply and audibly, and most strangely of all sometimes when the mouse is sticking I can hear that grind/click noise the drives make they're loading something.
I'm putting my money on a virus that Ad-Aware and isn't finding.
    Any help's appreciated, thanks.
PS: Replacing the mouse didn't work.

Solution didn't work for me. There's no grime or buildup. The mouse itself seems fine, but the left click function seems to be acting odd in the same ways described above.

My wireless mouse and receiver are not synching

Try clicking on the left mouse button. I have a relative with a wireless mouse and found that it sometimes loses connection and that clicking on the mouse button 'woke it up' and started working again.

Logitech G7 cordless laser mouse - erratic action

Acting on advice from another FixYa string, we blew out the mouse and dock several times with canned air. It performed slightly better, but then as we continued to use the mouse it suddenly cleared and is working almost 100% now.

From reading earlier strings, I'm wondering why Logitech (in its product material received on purchase) doesn't recommend this as periodic maintenance for the mouse?
