Question about Audio Players & Recorders

Open Question

I just bought an old 70s zenith integrated stereo system with allegro 1000 speakers. it has a radio, 8-track, cassette and record player. everything works, but i can't get the record player switch to move from the off position... it seems mechanically stuck somehow... i've tried rotating the console to reset the mechanics, but still no use. any suggestions?

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

I had this problem; much of the trouble seemed to come down to lubricant on all of the plastic gears of the transport assembly that had hardened. I had to send it to a fellow in New Jersey who specializes in the Porta One and he basically had to take apart the transport, clean the plastic parts, and put it back together again.

If you're very very handy, you can find the service manual online. It will not show you how to do any of this, but it will include exploded diagrams of the machine and tell you the name of the parts so that when you lose some random dingus or frammus under the couch, you'll know what to look for online to replace it.

SOURCE: Philco Console On/Off Switch

It sounds like the knob part has has lost grip on the spindle of the switch, due to age. The knob part is designed to pull off (though sometimes they have an allen screw to keep them on) for service. You could try and pull it off! However it could (due to its age) have decayed and so might break up. If you do try to pull it off, turn it to the off position and when you put it back on put the knob pointer at the off point.
However it is safe to operate at the present.

On the 8 track the fixes and myself would need to know more details. Like: does it play, can you put a tape in etc, before giving a verdict.

Look in your area for any good cassette player they all can play the c90 tapes. All you have to do is have a cassette player. Large stores that have stereo dept. would be a good place to look where you can also hear them to see the sound quality.

Zenith turntable/cassette player/8 track. Serial # 934l4, Can't tell if the model # is IS 40 81-3 or 1 S (Or 15 4081), made in Taiwan. Wondered what age it is and if there are tubes inside?

Cassette tapes began to supplant 8 track in the mid 70's, so this is probably a transitional unit. Kind of like now - there are DVD players out there that still have VHS slots. I'd say late 70's and I'd guess no tubes.

Does old Zenith Allegro Console Stereo - 8 track/AM/FM/turntable, have a belt drive phono? I can see metal gears to drive the stuck turntable .

The manufacturers of such items would usually buy in such hardware as record turntables from fairly standard catalogues.

One popular brand of turntable was the BSR but the design of other brands were similar. The metal gears aren't for driving the turntable but to drive the multichange mechanism so when one record has finished playing another will drop from the stack loaded onto the extended centre spindle.

This type of turntable is driven by a synchronous motor with a multidiameter spindle via a moveable idler wheel equipped with a soft rubber tyre. Lack of maintenance causes many problems and as the rubber tyre ages it tends to harden and lose traction on the inside of the steel turntable so when the record reaches the end and the metal gears engage there is insufficient torque and everything stops.
It is for that reason many older examples have had the multichange removed or disabled.

Removing the turntable centre motif should reveal a circlip which when removed will allow the turntable to be removed for maintenance.

Trying to find a way to get the turntable of a Zenith Allegro Console to work. We have turned to whole unit on and off. AM and FM radio plays. Turntable doesn't turn. At the bottom right of the turn...

Lift the turn table off the case and check the belt if it has one or the idler wheel that mechanically turns the table. Also check the motor to see that it rotates when you simulate a record play moving the needle carrier towards the center, The power must be on to test it. Becareful not to touch the 115 VAC line.
