Open it and take a look on the back-light lamp on the inverter board...if it is smokie and appears have to change it ..(if you can get one ..or change the inverter board..
But if the lamp seam ok ..check the fuse on the inverter board ..(it will be a small one near the 12 pin connector) ..and this might be the cause..and you will not have to change the inverter ..or do other invasive operations..
anyway ..t change the inverter will cost you about 50 $ the part ..and the operation is not that complicated and can be done by anyone with a little attention..

Yikes, that is a very bad problem. You are exactly correct in that the backlight has failed. You can get a replacement backlight, but it is a very difficult repair, and the backlight is going to cost at least $70. You can get a brand new screen for only $105 with free shipping and no tax. I would recommend you do this... it will be a much better screen anyway. Also you can sell your current screen on ebay, even with the backlight problem for around $20.. then use the box from the new screen to ship it in and you will be good to go.

Here is the monitor I recommend, the one that is $105:

Follow this step to check the lcd screen :
Just plug this to the power supply and see if you get the colour lines on the screen if you get the colour lines that means the lcd is fine,
but if u dont get that u will have to replace the lcd screen.
If you get the colour bars then the component responcibe to give light on the screen needs replacement.

Depending on the age of your laptop there is a good chance that your backlight inverter is no longer functioning.

What type of laptop do you have and how many years have you had it?

Depending on the model you might be able to pick up an inverter very cheap.

Hello !

It is typically the display's backlight or inverter board.

If you were experiencing discoloration in the screen (pinkish lower light hues) before it failed, that would indicate a CCFL backlight issue. If the screen suddenly went dim on you rather than a slow degradation the inverter would be indicated.

Hope this helps.

You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashes on and off or displays reddish pink hue. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickers on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replace the CCFL lamp.
To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight. It could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out, this is the most likely case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Dark screen

if the picture is REALLY dark, like you can just barely see it in a lit room, then the backlight might not be lit. LCD TVshave backlight that shines through the LCD screen which allows you to see the picture.

If it's not the backlight then it would be the brightness/contrast settings that need to be adjusted. If the picture used to be normal and all of a sudden went dark, verify the backlight. Normally you can look through the slots on the top of the set and determine if the backlight is on. If you can see a bright light through any of the slots, the backlight is probably OK... go after the brightness/contrast settings.
