The Right Laptop for College

My name is Craig, and I'm going off to college this Fall and I'm looking for a laptop. I really like the Apple computers, not a big fan with how much Windows crash, but my grandfather, who is buy my laptop for me, wants to be sure that I'm getting a laptop that will handle everything I need for college. I told him that I think a Mac will be best, and he doesn't care. He just wants whatever is going to be best.

Any suggestions?

What are you going to mainly use it for?
If its only college and to run basic apps, macbook will do you fine.
If you're looking to play games, then macbook pro (as it has the latest nvidia geforce 8600gt graphics card)

Am I always supposed to hear the fan of my computer?

Hi AriEl,
No, the MBP's fan should not be a loud sound.
The fans on my regular MacBooks do make an audible sound, but it's a low 'white noise' king of thing that I don't really notice unless there is no other noise in the room, or if I make myself aware of it.
You can try blowing compressed air into the vents at the back of the laptops bottom piece. That sometimes helps by getting rid of excess dust in the fan blades & vents.
If it doesn't help, you might need to take the MacBook to an Apple Store or other Apple certified repair shop.
Hope this helps you!

Hi and thank you for using fixya:
Laptop are very sensitive to heat. They do not contain enough space to put a big fan to cool off the processor. I recommend you buy the cooling docks they sell for about $20.00 with a fan on it. If your laptop has a AMD processor you are really going to need it AMD gets really hot.
Good luck

Go on e-bay and buy you a new screen or a good used screen for cheap and do the replacement yourself. The process is really quite painless. Go to ifixit for the instructions or you can go on you tube and watch the videos.

When i switch on my laptop, before booting it is showing fan error and then it turn's of automaticaly...if im press acces ibm putton then it is booting but the fan is not running

Hey Karikalan! Make sure you don't run your computer without the fan on! This can cause permanant damage to the CPU as well as other components.

Sounds like you need a new CPU fan for your laptop. These usually range in price around $60 - $130. They can be installed by a computer expert, or if you want you can try it youself. Be careful though Processors and internal components are very sensitive! To install it youself you'll have to remove the bottom part of the computer's casing. Once that's finished you should see a part that looks like a mix of plastic / metal with a fan about 1" big in the middle of it. This is the component you'll want to replace. A new fan can be obtained from IBM or you can order an equivalent on Ebay. Usually they are cheaper this way.

Hope this helps!
