Question about KitchenAid Microwave Ovens

Open Question

Hi. The microwave oven (KEMC308KSS01) shows the error message "DOOR" when attempting to start the microwave. I've checked the 20 amp bus fuse and it's fine (reads 0.3 ohms across the terminals. I understand that there is also a 15 amp line fuse. Is this accessed from the back of the microwave? Any other suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks.

SOURCE: Whirlpool microwave/oven model RM286PXV3

I have a 13yr old above-range oven which quit when my wife cooked food in an aluminized foil wrapper (a small fire ensued!). This oven has 3 thermal protection units, on the magnetron, the chassis and on top of the food cavity. This last one had failed open, and since it's in series with the magnetron thermal protection unit and the main relay, nothing would work. MAT electronics sell the units for less than $4, but my problem now is to pick one with the appropriate temperature cut-off. They range from 200 to 300F.

SOURCE: Fuses keep blowing out

In case it's still helpful, I'll inject a little sanity into the replies.

If the fuse blows as soon as you hit Start, it's probably a shorted high-voltage capacitor. That's usually economical to repair.

If the fuse blows a few seconds after you hit Start, it's probably a shorting high-voltage transformer. That's usually not economical to repair.

It's not radiation (non-ionizing RF by the way) that's the hazard, it's the voltages.

SOURCE: Microwave oven blowing 20 amp ceramic fuse

Chances are if the varistor fails, it fails drastically causing a short circuit across the supply. It will sit across the supply (it will look like a thick ceramic capacitor) and you can check for continuity after isolating that at one end. If it shows low resistance (it should show almost open circuit with a Digital meter), replace it.

It need not be the culprit. If you are familiar working with High voltage circuits ( they are lethal inside a microwave ovens as the current capability is high here), you can discharge the doubler capacitor and isolate the high voltage diode to check for shorts in the HT area.

Check the door latch switch inside the oven. The 4 switches where the door hooks latch on to when the door is closed has to engage with the door hooks to tell the oven that the door is closed. loosen the 2 phillip screws that holds the switch assembly and slide it to adj. and ensure that the switches close when the door is closed.
Sometimes the switches go bad and cannot make contact and must be replaced. If you see that the connectors on the switch is discolored or overheated replace the switch, it is bad.

Microwave door warning light

If this is a built-in wall oven with microwave on top, it is probably the 20-amp fuse located above the microwave. It is wired in series with 1 of the door switches, hence the "door" message. The only problem is that you have to pull out the microwave oven (at least part-way) to be able to get to that fuse.

My whirlpool microwave/oven combo is displaying a "DOOR" error message, and the microwave won't work. I have replaced a 20a bus fuse and all 3 door micro switches... It is still displaying the "DOOR"

When microwaves first got popular I used to be a helper with my next door neighbor who fixed them. I does sound like you should have covered it with those switches. If you close the door very slowly, pulling back on the door see if you can hear all 3 switches clicking. You should be able to hear them easily. If you only hear the first 2 try pushing on the door to hear the 3rd. If it will click with pressure on the corners or in the middle then you door is tweaked, possibly from pulling on the door hard to open it or smacking into something on the edge. If you can hear all 3 switches and it still wont start then its going to be the sensor that receives the signal from the switches. I'm not sure how accessible those are on today's models since they make them as disposables now, back then they cost around $500 so they were serviced.

The 20 amp power fuse blows every time i start the mircowave oven?

The oven probably has a bad interlock monitor switch, one of several switches in a microwave that are operated by the door latches. The switch is wired so the fuse will blow if you try to run the oven with the door open, and it isn't operating properly when you close the door. As soon as the oven kicks on the power to the magnetron tube, the microwave source, the fuse blows. The switch may have been damaged if the door was slammed, or it's just a mechanical failure. It's not an expensive part, but any microwave repair involving the door should be done by a professional because of safety concerns, so you will have some labor cost to add in. It shouldn't cost as much as a new oven to make this repair, though, so it's probably worth fixing.

I presume you mean the fuse within the microwave.
If it is doing that, firstly check the door switches, if there is no problem then check the diode and capacitor supplying the magnetron. BEWARE, THERE ARE LETHAL VOLTAGES AT THAT POINT!!!
I suspect there will be a problem with the door switches.

Hi, my problem is with my GE advantium speedcook microwave oven. When using 'speedcook' feature, the oven starts, then there is sparking inside the circuit board area, followed by a loud POP, and this...

  • Select the "Options" menu and adjust the clock display settings if the display is blank. Set the clock if the oven won't start. The clock must be set for the oven to work properly, as oven programming is dependent on the clock.
  • Close the door tightly if the oven won't start. The oven won't start if the door isn't closed. You can identify from the lights whether the oven failing to start is related to the door or to the power supply. If the control panel is illuminated and interior lights are on when you open the oven door, you can be sure the oven is receiving power and any starting problems are due to the door not being closed tightly.
  • Press and hold the "Clear/Off" button if the oven performs strangely. Be sure to hold it for a few seconds. This will reset the GE Advantium.
But as you mentioned that there is /was a loud noise this is a indication of the unit make any usual noise (groaning, gurgling, etc.?) or was / is it either louder or quieter than normal? It may be as simple as the top door switch or its mount or it may be a bad magnetron or shorted diode.
