I need a picture of how the sping fits in between the float and needle vavle on a 1976 35hp evinrude motor.

The small wire that might be considered a spring loop slips over the end of the needle and the other end slides uver the float arm . float level needs to be set then , with a float gauge

Where does the jet that fell out when I removed the float go


When you removed the float no jet should have fallen out. If you take out the retainer pin for the float you will be removing the bowl float and needle valve. The head of the needle has a shaft that fits onto the tab of the float bowl and fits into the hole where the needle valve seat is.

Gas from the tank runs through the engine (when the motor is off)


Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.


You can fix this yourself.
(Turn off the fuel selector)
Remove the carb float bowl nut and bowl. Note the gaskets upper and lower. Remove the float pin retaining the float and drop the float and float needle together.
Briefly turn on the fuel selector and then back off. You are flushing debris from the float needle seat. It is a good idea to use carb cleaner to ensure that the float needle seat area is clean.
ALSO spray carb cleaner into the threaded area where the bowl nut attaches. Your cleaning off the metering jet orifice up inside the threaded area.
INSPECT the float needle itself. The rubber tip should be tapered and pliable. If there are any nicks cuts or debris on the end of the needle first wipe it off and determine if you need a replacement float needle.

Reinstall float and needle ensuring you have the float pin properly installed.
CLEAN the bowl NUT along with the float bowl. Then reinstall the the float bowl. 2 gaskets upper and lower must be properly seated.

Turn on the fuel selector...
Test for leaks.

This should fix the leak but... if you still have the problem and did not change the float needle and seat. Change them. The float needle seat can be difficult to remove. I find that air in the fuel supply manifold fitting will blast most of them out but... sometimes I have to use a drill bit the size of the hole to cut the rubber material and then dig it out with a scribe or jewelers screwdriver. Just make sure to clean the hole with carb cleaner before installing the new seat. To install the new seat... reverse the drill bit using the flat chuck driven end and press it into place. Works great!

My 2005 883 low's petcock rubber went bad and i think a piece went into the carb. The carb now sticks and I have replaced the petcock and cleaned the carb but it is still sticking and leaking gas every...


If the carb is leaking gas, that's about all it could be. Remove your air filter cover, the air filter element, and the backing plate from the engine and carb. Once you have this out of the way, you can gain access to the four screws that hold the float bowl on. Remove these four bolts and allow the float bowl to drop off the bottom of the carb, you may have to tap the bowl a bit to get it turn loose. Gently tap it with the handle of a screwdriver. With the float bowl off, you can now push out the small pivot pin that holds the float on. The float and the needle will drop away from the carb. Notice that the needle has a wire clip to hold the needle onto the tab on the float. When replacing the float, make sure your needle is positioned on the tab with this spring clip. Remove the fuel line from it's fitting on the carb and blow compressed air into the carb fitting to blow out any trash that might be in the "seat" of carb.

Inspect the end of the needle valve and put it back on the tang of the float. Reposition the float with the needle in the seat and put the pin back in. This can be aggerevating since the carb is upside down for this operation but it can be done. Once you get the pin back in. gently lift up on the float until it stops. Then slowly lower it until your finger comes away from the float. This is to check to see if it is sticking somewhere. As long as it has a full range of motion and moves feely your alright there.

Now, turn the float bowl upside down and remove the two screws that hold the acellerator pump cover on. Under the cover you'll find a spring, a diaphragm, and an O-ring. Pay attention to how these parts are positioned. Lift the diaphragm out and hold it up to the light. Gently stretch it and see if you see any holes. If not, the diaphragm is alright. Place the diaphragm back into position with the raised lip along the edge positioned into the groove around the pump cavity. Position the O-ring in it's location in the cover and stand the sping on top of the metal piece in the diaphragm. Put the cover on and replace the two screws.

Reposition the float bowl and replace the screws. Reconnect the fuel hose. Replace the air filter backing plate, air filter element, and cover. Check the throttle for proper operation. You don't want to start the engine only to find out that the throttle is stuck wide open. Once you're sure you've got everything right, start the engine.

Briggs & Stratton 6hp yard machine with 21inch cut. Not getting fuel. I replaced a bad fuel line and now no fuel! If I take the air filter off and spray fuel into the carb it runs until I quit.


The fuel bowl needs to be removed and a new float and needle needs to be installed. The float "floats" in the gas bowl raising the needle, letting fuel into the carb. The repair kit cost about $5 and easily replaced. The float is attached with a pin and the needle fits on the float.

sounds like your pilot jet may be clogged, or your needle valve is stuck shut, remove the float bowl and check it out. (the pilot jet will be the smallest one, and the needle vavle will be attached to the plastic float assembly.

Evinrude outboard hard to start


If it is flooding then you need to remove the carbs and check your float level and see if your needle and seat are worn out. If you hold your carb upside down with the bowl off then your float should be level straight accross. If it is not straight accross then you can bend the tang by the needle until it is level.
