Question about Washing Machines

3 Answers

I have a 2002 Whirpool Top Load "Catalyst" clothes washer that works perfectly....except for the fact that it makes a loud clicking or ratchet type noise at the start of every spin cycle. It appears as if the noise starts before the clutch engages. I have replaced the coupler, so that is not the issue. Any suggestions? As I said, except for the noise, it works perfect. One other fact, though not totally reliable, is that the noise sounds like it is originating from the top left (facing the washer) rear portion of the unit. Thanks

Too many possibles....to ad some more detail, the clicking/ratcheting noise is LOUD....and starts before the drum starts spinning, and will continue while the drum is spinning with no real pattern...sometimes shorter, sometimes longer.

  • dcmajapan Oct 02, 2010

Can anyone narrow this down? Based on the info I have so far my best option is to buy new and junk this machine once it finally craps out.

Okay, I will pull the washer apart tonight, but I purposely did some "listening," and the noise is definately eminating from the top left (facing washer) rear area of the washer. What mechanical items are there in that area that can produce a loud ratceting sound only before and during the spin cycle???? Thanks

  • dcmajapan Oct 04, 2010

I have definately isolated the sound to the top left (facing the washer) rear panel area. What mechanical device in that area could be the problem? Thanks

  • dcmajapan Oct 05, 2010

Okay....assume this is a troubleshooting step to isolate the noise source?

Disconnect power then remove the two Phillips-head screws securing the lower left and right rear corners of the console to the washer top. Tilt the console back on the hinges that secure the top of the console to the washer back.

Disconnect the lid switch harness connector by pressing on the tab located in the middle and pulling it up.

The cabinet is attached to the rear of the washer by two brass-colored retaining clips. Insert a flat blade screwdriver into the turned-up edge of the clip, located on both sides, and then pry back to release the clip from the slot in the cI have a 2002 Whirpool - 4e2277c.jpg/>4e2277c.jpg

Using the side of your leg and/or body as a support for the front of the cabinet, carefully lift up the cabinet and set it aside. You can now visually inspect the washer and find the source of the clicking noise. Jump a wire between the wires of the lid switch connector on the console side to make the washer run.

Bring the cabinet to the front of the washer when reinstalling then slide the front bottom rail of the cabinet under the rail at the base of the machine then lay down the cabinet into position. Make sure the slots in the cabinet sit into the tabs at the base of machine.

Reconnect the lid switch harness then push the retaining clips back down into position to secure the cabinet to the rear of the machine. Reinstall and secure the console to complete the repair.

What can be done to finalise the source of the fault is to disconnect the power of the unit. Now disconnect the motor from the control panel connecctions.
Checking hte voltage on the motor apply a voltage so as to simulate the drive, be careful when you do this and do not lett your hands in as the motor rotates. You can now hear/see the source of noise as the mtoro is engaged or disengaged.
If there is a geared drive to the spin cycle to increase the RPM then it is possible that the unit be taken out and overhauled , to be greased and set back.
If not this can be the start of the spin which can be a drive slipping.
Reccify and reconnect the motor connection back.

Did you checked the lid switch. In some cases the lid switch gets short and this causes the clicking noise. If the lid switch is faulty the spin cycle will not start. But if the lid switch is getting short then spin cycle will work but such clicking noise occurs. But if the lid switch checked ok then the other possibility is motor coupler,in your case the coupler is replaced, the other possibility for such noise before spin cycle is problem in clutch or problem in transmission or transmission pulley. As you mentioned the noise comes before the clutch engages, but still check the transmission and transmission pulley. ------------------- If the spin basket is spinning back and fourth during agitation the sifter coil is bad. When the sifter coil is bad and the spin basket is turning during wash the bottom shipping brace will hit one another this will make a loud click each time the motor changes directions during wash.

Usually you get 2 springs holding the top of the drum. If either spring reaches the point where it momentarily stops being in tension, it makes a hell of a noise, out of
all proportion to its little size.

There should be two springs from
the top of the drum, one to the front of the machine and one to the back.Check both this springs.

    -----------

Also one more possibility.Check the drain pump and drain hose.If there is any thing got stuck like single metal nail or some coins or any thing like that, then this will make the noise .Check the pump and hose for drain.Confirm that there is no such blockage.

    ----------

Thanks for keeping updated with the query.

check the drain pump and hose assembly.

I have the exact same unit in a 2nd home we just purchased and when the repair guy came, he said "it was in perfect working condition". Mine also has next to no agitation, I think a goldfish swimming around in a bowl makes more motion. I absolutely hate this washer and will replace it asap.

Loud clicking while agitating

You may have debris stuck in the pump.
This can cause the clicking sound and also bind the pump causing a circuit overload.
