Hi There - thanks for the quick response. When I replaced the convergence ICs I checked those resistors, no heat discoloration and measured with ohm meter and values are unchanged from your description. I wonder can the microprocessor chip eprom loose its programing? If so where would I download drivers?

Initially I can turn set on with ON/Off control on control panel. Pressing MENU button on control panel screen changes to service menu. Pressing MENU button advances to next item, CHANNEL button on Control Panel selects item. Pressing MENU returns to previous screen. The only time that the remote has any effect is when the EXIT button is pressed, exiting MENU and returning to video - Mike

I do have service manual. Can only pull up convergence pattern from manual selection on the Front Control Panel of the set. The set responds to the EXIT button only from the remote control. Is there a procedure to restore the set to factory presets?

I have changed out the Convergence Chips on the JVC, checked the resistors all ok no burns resistances ok, only able to turn on tv from front panel on set, advance thru menu with MENU button on set, only function that works on remote is EXIT button, is the programming of the set corrupted, if so how is TV reset to factory presets?

    Hi Tim

Thanks for the quick resopnse. One of my earlier thoughts (not posted) was the IR receiver module. I have purchased IRs for the module board. The original configuration has only 1 IR receiver on the board though the board has the capability for 2 and the loom is set up to accept 2. Only thing to do to the board to accomodate 2 is to add the second IR receiver and a 1K resistor. To say the least this has really had me scratching my head.

Hi Tim - In a few moments I am going to replace the original IR receiver to get it to a functioning state then, add the second IR. It seems odd to me that JVC would have the wiring in place but only use a board with half the capability. - MIke

Hi Tim - I replaced the I/R receiver and no improvement. To recap, convergence ICs were changed - cleared popping problem, video appears, diagonal lines from upper right to lower left, picture really bright and washed out, pressing front control panel MENU button, menu appears, pressing MENU button scrolls thru menu, channel < > selects item. When convergence is is selected and screen changes to the alignment crosses then and only then does the set respond to the remote and then only the EXIT button. Any other ideas?

Hi Tim - I tried to go into Self-Test Mode, on front panel, Press Volume down button and press ON/OFF button will not display, raster is present, Input displays (Input 4) in upper right corner in this case I have my laptop plugged in the front panel screen is washed out just bright redish light. When I press Service button in front of set I do get cross-hatch grid and dashed cross-hatching alternating between red and green. - Mike

I have been working on the off and on for a year. I researched my notes from a year ago. Have you heard of problems with production crayon marks on back side of boards causing shorts? The other thing I can posible see is the IC2 Memory Chip for the CPU lost its programming. Can a replacement be ordered or firmware reloaded to it?

Can this chip have memory reloaded? If not does JVC still sell replacements?

I did an online check with The Parts Store and found the part MM1437AF-X for $20.95, JVC P/N is IC 703/IC1703 AT24C32 for $45.57. In either case I do not know if the chip comes pre-programmed. If not pre-programmed I am sunk as in order to get into the Service Mode, you must press the Sleep Timmer button and while the "0" is displayed press the Display

cont: and the VSTATUS button. Since the set responds only to the EXIT button well, it may not be repairable and off to the landfill. So far my investment has been my time and $30 in parts.

Hi Tim - I was able to get the Technician Screen to appear (hold -Volume button, then press ON/OFF then release) the display came up and verified MEM NG. This looks like I might have to purchase it from JVC. I can purchase this chip locally for about $8 but it is diffinately unprogrammed. I know most folks would have tossed this set by now. I have a mind set that I should be able to sign my name to a project, even if it is for me. My need for this set is to have a very large monitor for my computer. I also have an Advent Videobeam 1000A I reapaired it is a 1978 model. I will pay you for your time. Thanks again for your help. Here is my email address if you want to contact me. I took a little bit of back and forth as the problem finally narrowed to the memory chip IC703, after getting a manual Tech Screen display the Self Tests verified MEM NG. When this happens the set wil not respond to most all buttons of the REMOTE CONTROL.

Hmmm very strange, does it respond to the remote at all? Sounds like somehow the I/R receiver stopped working at the same time or was disconnected. Looks like you've been around a few days here, have you made any progress?

Thanks
Tim

I missed the question there.. it sounds like you have it handled? You are adding a second I/R receiver and the resister then correct? Or just replace the one i/r receiver and at least get it back to fully functioning...

They do things like that more than you can imagine. The company just mass produces the boards for them and they use the same boards in many model TVs, some using 2 i/r receivers, some using just one... They say a few pennies by leaving off that second IR on many models but use the same board because it's more expensive to have another board made...

Anyway, hope that module gets you back up and running!

Wow that is a wild one.. but before was the remote responding at all? If that exit button was working before I definitely missed that part, that would have confirmed that the i/r module was working.. I read through all the comments I could see from before I got involved and didn't see that mentioned..

I am conferring with a few people here to see what we can come up with for what could be going on here.

    Thanks

People here are thinking it's the main board of the TV and that is my suspicion as well. Still researching though, what are you thoughts on the mainboard?

A replacement for that IC 2 memory unit for the CPU? Yikes, that will be hard to find but it's possible....

I saw that chip at partstore.com as well, but am quite sure it isn't pre-programmed. I think you may be right in that you want to just replace at this point... I'd be going crazy over there if it were me...

You are suppose to be able to adjust with Remote Control Hand Unit.
Go to Retrevo.com They might have Service Mannual and Owners Mannal.
Are you not able to adjust Convergence ? Does Covergence Pattern come up?

If you have no video and its making a popping noise its mostlikely shorted convergence circuits. Contact www.TvRepairKits.com and ask them to make you a kit for chirping sets.

JVC AV-48WP30 48 in. Rear... Problem

Your convergence I.C's ( integrated circuits ) Have failed. Replace Both I.C's with Stk392-150's. The unit is equipped with 110's. These are large IC's pn the convergence board located near the front of the unit. You need soldering/desoldering experience to do this job. I would recommend seeking professional assistance.

Which IC should I replace if the RED is off?

You would need the service manual to dtermine which IC controls the red. One IC controls red and the other controls blue. If the red was replaced before. It probaly went out as some suppliers dont use origional sanyo ICs. Which unfortunately dont last as long as the sanyo parts do.

1.5 days after replacing both IC chips the blue started ghosting again and then...

The biggest problem you stated yourself. You bought aftermarket type IC's. You should have been smarter and purchased the correct IC's for the set. All IC's are not alike, even with the same number on them. Aftermarket IC's are just that. Built in China or are factory rejects. You might get away with replacing the iC's again from a reliable dealer or you might have messed up the power supply in the meantime. Good Luck
