How do I fix a Sony Rear Projection television with convergence issues?

the convergence circuit probably failed. there are resistors that I remember would burn up and cause the convergence ICs to fail. I would check with a servicer to see if the parts are even still available.

Picture not in focus

Devices: All projection TV's (HD or analog), especially Samsung

If its a Samsung HCN653W (or similar model), the first thing to try is the menu option named "Magic Focus", which tunes the set's focus.

Otherwise, it sounds like a job for a convergence. Perform a convergence procedure on your TV, and if the problem recurs within a few days/weeks, then your TV's 'convergence amplifier' board (aka "convergence amp board") is starting to fail.
This board may fail completely, in which case, your convergence procedure will fail to improve the picture.
A "convergence procedure" can be performed entirely by just using the appropriate setup menu option and your remote control.
This board may partially fail, in which case your convergence procedure will properly converge the Red, Blue, Green colors on just part of the screen, whereas a properly functioning convergence amp board will allow complete convergence of the colors across the entire screen.
Your TV's convergence procedure instructions will be found in your TV's Owners Manual.
At least one Projection TV manufacturer recommends that the consumer perform a convergence procedure every 30 days, but most TV owners find that excessive, and might only do one when (a) there's an evident color convergence problem in any part of the picture, or (b) once every 3-6 months.

How-to video:
how-to instructions:

cost to you: $zero

If the convergence amp board is bad, cost for a service call would be $300 (USD) plus $100 for a new board plus 50% markup on parts = about $450 (USD)
Cost to order a new board online: about $100 (USD) + shipping + sales tax.
Alternatively, if you can solder/desolder STK's (Power Amplifier Integrated Circuits), one can repair a convergence amp board for as little as $30 (USD) or so.

Automatic convergence feuses

Your convergence has failed and needs to be repaired. Once quick test is to goto your convergence menu and see if you can adjust red and blue. If not its has failed and needs to be fixed. You can call in a repair shop or you can get the parts and instructions from and do the repair yourself. Its a fairly easy DIY fix.

Magic focus does not work. RGB projections do not line up.

That symptom is usually caused when the convergence ICs and associated resistors fail. You can get convergence repair kits for the various Hitachi models from the kids contains both ICs and the associated resistors plus the CD with repair instructions.

Convergance problem

Hi, I`m assuming your going into the menu and trying to adjust convergence and the lines won`t align? If so the convergence IC`s have failed and that circuit will need to be checked to see which parts have failed and then replace them, probably time to call in a tv tech for that one, video-tek

Can't control red convergence on VS-45607

The STKs are three channel ICs they each control horizontal and vertical of one color the third channel controls part of green and the other half of green is controled by the other ICs third channel. Its customary for the Ics to fail and only have one channel bad in the IC. However its recomended to change both because of the bad Ic having green it can actually weaken the other IC and that one will fail shortly.

Convergence prob for d52w26 rear projection tv 52"

If the auto-convergence is not working then the convergence amp ICs are starting to fail. If you can solder, try resoldering the pins on these ICs. If that fails to resolve the problem, replace the ICs. These are large black ICs attached to a heatsink and should be marked STKxxx.

Keep us posted.

Good Day, jamelpp;

Sounds like the warped picture may be caused by the convergence output IC's, but try this first:

RCA HDTV bought in 2006. The picture has a "curved" appearance and the colors blurr together.

Failed convergence circuit and the problem can be the convergence power supply, convergence amp bd. or even the defelection/power bd. You will need a qualified tech to diagnose the problem. Sometimes these bds. will develop bad connection but most time it is a failed part.

Bad convergance, blurry

you are having a convergence fail. would need to replace the STK convergence ICs. they are probably going to be STK392-040 and there are 2 of them. you would also need to check all the pico fuses around the area.
