Your main problem is that you are trying to use a 4GB SDHC card in an approximately 8 year old camera which was only designed to accept a maximum 512MB SD card and which only worked reliably with 256MB SD cards. When your camera was designed, 128MB cards were the largest size available and so hardware testing only went up that far.

SDHC cards use a different memory structure to SD cards and older devices cannot use them even though they will fit in the slot. As it's a hardware limitation there is no firmware update option.

Your only fix is to obtain the correct type and capacity of SD card or to replace your camera with one which accepts SDHC cards.

I hope you manage to use this information to fix your problem or at least that it assists you to choose your next course of action. Please take a moment to rate the free answer I have provided for you and any testimonial which you might wish to add is always welcome!

Memory card locked

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

What does card protected mean?

Wheb you have a SD, SDHC or SDXC memory card and you put the switch to the lock position, the card is protected, That means nothing can change the files that are stored on the card. Not by wiring, not by deleting and not by formatting. Keep the lock with up, towards the golden connection points.

It's a lost cause. The A540 works with SD cards. While SDHC cards will fit into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work in devices not designed for them. You need to stay with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

If your camera is the type that uses SD cards, then your problem is that the camera was developed in 2004 before SDHC cards were invented. Your camera cannot use them.

MEMORY CARD LOCKED SIGN COME UP UNABLE TO TAKE PHOTOS, HOW DO I UNLOCK THE MEMORY CARD?

Hello Carol,

If it is a SD or SDHC card you can see a little sliding switch on the left hand side of the card on the label side.
When this is slid down it locks the card.
Push it back up to unlock the card.

Hope this help.

I have a SanDisk SDHC Card class 4 4 gb and it won't work in my Canon Power shot SD630, I get a memory error that says card is locked, however card is not locked, what camera canI use this card in?

The SD630 works with MMC and SD cards, 2GB or smaller. It does not work with higher-capacity SDHC cards.

Your SDHC card can be used in any camera that accepts SDHC cards.

I put a brand new SanDisk SDHC 4 GB memory card in and it says "memory card error; card is locked".

I also own an A620, but unfortunately I also learned the hard way that SDHC cards are not compatible with this camera. The A620 was designed before the newer SDHC format came out, thus although they look exactly the same, your camera will never work with these cards. Your camera uses standard SD cards (2GB or less). There are some standard 4GB SD cards, but they are very rare these days, and costly.
