It is not necessary to convert. Open the pptx file in PowerPoint 2007 and save as a 2003 ppt file compatible.
Alternately and probably the easiest is to use Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. The latest version of the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats can be downloaded for free from Microsoft.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.
Thank you for using FixYa.

1 Open the PPT file with PowerPoint. 2 In the menu, select "File,"then "Send To," then "Microsoft Word." This opens a dialogbox where you can select the content and format of the items that will be inthe Word file you create. 3 Select the appropriate buttons for theoptions you want and click "OK". Word opens and displays the newfile. If you selected any of the "slides" options you will have atable with one column containing representations of the PowerPoint slides. 4 Edit the slide objects as needed in thesame way you would for a text box.

When do you start MS PowerPoint then
office check for problems such as add-ins or file extension that
would not start powerpoint. If you find such problem then try to
start your MS PowerPoint in safe mode.
If you will be able to start in safe
mode then there is a problem with add-ins. So disabling the add-ins
can fix the problem.
You can disable the add-ins by
Click the File tab.
On the Manage menu, click Disabled
