Just bought and installed a new HP Photosmart D5160, had to download the driver as the disc provided didn't have Vista drivers. I've tried restarting the PC (Vaio laptop) and restarting the printer but just keep getting "cover is open" message. I'm not impressed.

I have had this issue with two D5160's, a poor cheap design i in my opinion. Symptom's were that after you had lifted and then lowered the main lid the red exclamation LED would continue to flash. The left hand front corner of the lid (near LED) did appear to be raised up but pressing it down made no difference. Sometimes if you listed the lid a couple of inches and then let it drop everything would be OK.
With the power cable disconnected I removed the left hand side off the printer, this is just clipped on but you do have to be careful with the part that wraps around under the card reader. This needs to be bent quite a lot to remove but it is possible without breaking. Start at the bottom gradually pressing the clips and separating it from the printer. Gradually work around up the front and then it lifts away from the top of the printer. Now, if you raise and lower the lid you will see two sliders moving. These are the problem, they tend to bind and not allow the mechanism to slide enough. I applied a small amount of silicone lubricant spray to each slider. After a couple of operations the difference was really obvious, the lid now does all the way down so its sits flush. Clip the side back on by reversing the above procedure and your done. Hope this helps.

Hello David.

This is a recurring problem with some of these printers. It can be caused by a sluggish cover reset switch.

The remedy is to lift the cover to around 30mm and let it drop down. this should reset the switch and remove the red ! mark from the LCD window..

The problem is with the plastic mechanism in the door switch. You pull off the end cover to expose the mechanism & lift the switch manualy and then glue in a small piece of plastic to keep the lift bar straight as I did on mine.

30 mm drop worked !! After I had 'retired' the printer and replaced it with a Canon in frustration ! Pity, I now just love the Canon.

For Mac Drivers, please visit here and follow the instructions given there.

It would be much easier for you and for me if you had mentioned the Operating System installed on your computer where you are going to install the printer. Anyway, select the suitable link for your operating system.

If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Problem of my printer photosmart d5160

I have the exact same printer. Struggled for hours with it, until I learned it's ways. If you have good cartridges in and purge your print buffer from your computer, then 'gently but firmly' slam the top cover.
I don't see sensors, etc that detect it being up, but I just closed mine, had ! blinking, etc. Then gently 'slammed' the top cover and it reset and worked great.

Cannot remember how to load new print cartridge on to my HP Photosmart D5160 series printer

keep the printer ON.then open the flap on the front side.there is a small gap made in the flap to get it opened.as u open the flap the cartridges will automatically move and come in the position where u can remove the cartridges.just pull the cartridge to the dwn side near to you and it will come out.in the same way insert the new cartridge.
