Question about NetGear DG834G 54 Mbps 802.11g Wireless ADSL Firewall Router w/4-port 10/100Mbps Switch (NTWRNGDG834G)

1 Answer

Cannot access the internet after installing new NetGear router.

I needed to change to a wireless/4-port switch so that my laptop could connect wirelessly throughout my home. However, after carefully following the set-up wizard to install this new router, the only problem that I have is that my ISP is not allowing me to access the internet. I have Verizon, and the router is a Netgear WGR614.

You need to change the IP address of the router. Plug just the router into the computer. Open Internet Explorer and go to 192.168.1.1. user: admin password:password. On the main page it allows you to change the LAN IP. Make it 192.168.2.1. Now unplug everything and rewire it correctly. This should fix the issue. Verizon uses 192.168.1.1 for the modem well so does Netgear and this causes the network to not function. So changing the IP of the router should fix this issue and has worked for me many times that I have done that set up.

Just having the wireless router without connecting it to cable modem or DSL modem will not allow you to get onto the Internet. The wireless card in your computer/laptop will allow you to get onto the Internet at a free public WiFi hot spot location such as McDonalds, Star Bucks, at the airport.
Also the wireless card in your computer/laptop may allow you to connect into an unsecured wireless router from your neighbors, if their wireless router is within range of your computer/laptop but without their permission to use their Internet, it is considered stealing from your neighbor. They have a set download limit from their Internet Service Provider and by you connecting to their ISP you may cause them to exceed their download limit and they would be charged additional costs for every Mega byte over their limit.

Router not hooked up properly??

Make sure that your computer is able to go online directly through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem, that means the modem is working fine.
You will need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

More information is needed.

(cable-modem? DSL-modem?)

How many friends will come over at the same time?
How many 'LAN' ports are on the Linksys? How many ports are "free" ?
How many 'LAN' ports are on the Netgaear? How many ports are "free" ?
How many "spare" Ethernet cables do you have?

Is your goal to provide computer-to-computer connectivity,
or are you just trying to provide Internet access for everybody?

Need basic step-by-step instructions on how to install my router.

To Configure the Router with Internet Access
Connect to one of the wireless router/access point's LAN Ethernet ports, turn off its DHCP server, and give the wireless router a static IP on your LAN:
  1. Connect a PC directly to a LAN port on the wireless router with an Ethernet cable.
  2. Power on the wireless router/access point.
  3. Reboot the PC.
  4. Log in to the wireless router though a browser. (Usually 192.168.1.1, with User Name = admin and Password = password, unless you changed them from the defaults).
  5. Go to the LAN IP menu and disable the wireless access point’s DHCP server by unchecking Use router as DHCP server.
  6. Select LAN IP, and change the IP to 192.168.1.99.
  7. Click Apply to save the settings. You will lose the connection to the wireless router/access point , since its IP changed.
  8. Log in to the wireless router/access point with the URL: http://192.168.1.99
  9. Connect one of the wireless router's Local (LAN) ports to your existing network.
This completes the wireless router/access point configuration.
  • You can now log in to the wireless router/access point at its new address of http://192.168.1.99 and configure wireless features such as WEP and Access Control List
  • UPnP, DMZ, Port Forwarding, and Port Triggering are not used on the wireless router/access point, and it doesn't matter how they are configured.
  1. Configure the LAN IP address to be within the same subnet as your PCs.
    • Take care not to use an IP address already being used.
    • Limit the number of addresses in the DHCP range and assign an IP address outside of the range to the router you want to use as the Access Point.
  2. Disable DHCP on the wireless router/access point.
  3. Connect one of the LAN ports on the wireless router/access point to a LAN port on the Router.
  4. Configure the SSID and any security settings on the wireless PCs to match the wireless router/access point's SSID and security settings.
a. SSIDs must be the same on all wireless devices. (These are case-sensitive: netGEAR is not the same as NETGEAR.)
b. Tip: Make sure the wireless PCs can connect before configuring WEP, WPA-PSK, or other wireless encryption.
