How to update my RAM. I dont know how to update my

More ram isn't going to necessarily speed up your computer. Ram basically allows you to multitask. The more ram you have the more things you can do at once. It helps with programs that are memory intensive. On older computers it's not always cost effective to upgrade ram because old ram remains expensive while newer DDR2 and DDR3 modules tend to be less expensive, however not compatible with your computer.

If you did want to add more its relatively simple to do. The side panel of a computer is usually held in place by two screws that can be access from the back of it. Make sure the computer is off and unplugged before messing with its innards. Once the side panel is removed look for something that looks similar to this:
moeava.jpg
The long yellow and green connectors are what I'm talking about. They will most likely be blue and black in your computer. There's tabs on either end of the connector that need to pushed outward and then the module comes right out.

Take that into your local computer shop and tell them you need more. One thing that you should try and determine is home much ram your computer supports. Often times older computers can't support more than 1-2 gigs. Anything over what's supported is just gonna go to waste, but not before costing you extra.

One thing i would suggest is moving away from Norton. In my experience Norton is a little bit of a memory (ram) hog. There's other free alternatives out there such as Avast and AVG that do just was well. You can also download a program called ccleaner. What this program does is clean unnecessary files that are taking up space. It also cleans your registry of invalid or no longer used entries which can slow a computer. Finally, it allows you to disable unnecessary programs from starting up when the computer starts which is often what ties up ram causing the computer to run slow.

I hope this was helpful and let me know if you have any questions.

Pc is very slow

You can speed up a slow running PC by:

-- cleaning system junk
-- optimizing computer services
-- optimizing internet
-- repairing registry
-- defraging registry
-- clearing browsers junk

do these things with some secure tool such as Intel Software Partner Reginout.

Thank you..

Dell computer.5 yrs.old. Very, very, slow. What can be done? Have dial up internet service. Also, what does memory upgrade mean?

Hi,

There's nothing you can do about your internet speed, dial up is dial up and is known to be slow. If you want fast internet then you would need broadband.

A memory upgrade would speed up the overall performance of the PC. For example: the computer may take 5 minutes to fully boot up and programs taking time to launch. This would not fully resolve but help it to be more responsive.

A memory upgrade is always recommended by me. I expect that your computer can be probably maxed out to 2GB of memory.

Regards.

I increased memory from 512 to 768 on Dell desktop with 2.4 celeron but did'nt seem to increase speed.what is the problem? Ray.

That minimal amount of increase is not going to be a very noticeable increase also the processor or a faster RPM hard drive is more for the speed. you can go to the system properties in control panel and then the advanced tab and then the settings tab on performance then to the Advanced Tab then to change tab in virtual memory then to custom size make the initial setting 1.5 times the amount of memory installed in your case 768 x 1.5 = 1152
on the max 3 x the amount of memory again, in you case 768
768 x 3 = 2304

I want to add more ram. Where do I get it? Dell

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, so don't 'Shoot the Messenger'!

The Dell Dimension 8200 Desktop PC uses RDRAM ram memory.
VERY expensive stuff!

Supporting Data:
This is Dell Support, Manuals, and the Dimension 8200 Service Manual,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8200/

Scroll down the list to the heading - Specifications, and left-click on it.

Scroll the page down until you come to the heading - Memory
Now look at the first subheading - Architecture
RDRAM

You have 4 ram memory slots. (memory connectors)

EACH, ram memory slot can support up to a Maximum amount, of 512MB. (512 MegaBytes)

TOTAL Maximum Amount for your computer is 2GB. (Not shouting)

1024MB = 1GB. (1024 MegaBytes = 1 GigaByte)

The type of Rdram ram memory is PC800, and it is Non-ECC.

(Error Correcting Control, or also stated as Error Correcting Code.
Used mostly for Server computers. Your computer does not use ECC ram memory)

In My Humble Opinion, (And again, don't shoot the messenger), it would be better money spent to buy a decent affordable computer, than it would be to upgrade the ram memory in this computer.

This statement is based upon the fact that the Dell Dimension 8200 ships with 128MB's of ram memory.
(Makes it a pretty slow computer. Rdram or not)

The average cost to install, for example, 1GB of ram memory is OUTLANDISH! (Not shouting)

Example 1:

http://www.4allmemory.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.memorySearch&model_id=24927

Example 2:

http://www.pcmemorystore.com/Dell-Dimension-8200-ram.htm

For about another $100 you can buy a pretty decent new desktop computer, that will run the one you have in circles.

Just my thoughts.

I have an old packard bell D1000 multimedia intelpentium, 133mh prcessor,1.2gb hard disk,32mb ram.33600bps modem 8x cd rom, what can be upgraded if any. I only use it for grandchildren but would like to...

rm,

Most likely, more RAM (memory) will help. That computer can hold a maximum of 128MB or RAM.

The EDO memory for that computer is no longer manufactured.
[72-pin EDO SIMM]

Used memory and possibly non-moving inventory are available.
Any such memory would be at a much HIGHER cost than current memory. (64MB is around $50)

I know you didn't ask for a recommendation; however,
1.) I recommend that you NOT upgrade the memory.
Even if the computer is upgraded to the max, it will still have similar performance issues.
Here is a link to a memory supplier;
or google: ""packard bell" d1000 memory"

2.) Consider a $275 Compaq computer from Office Depot - fully modern computer with DVD / CD, 2GB memory, Windows 7, AMD processor.
I know that's a lot of money for the purpose; however, it may be today's best bargain.

My computer is really slow. it has 128 mg of RAM.

Check your computer brand and see how much GB your meomory can take, but 4GB will be perfect for xp and vista. check your pc brand either if Dell and Hp and check it online how much the high meomory can take.

Replacing RAM in Dell Dimension 3000

Upgrading RAM will not affect your files. Just make sure you upgrade with compatible RAM & that you install it in pairs. So if you want 2 GB then you would want to be 2 x 1 GB RAM chips. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.

RAM Upgrade

See there are limitations to Motherboard to support the amount of RAM. You must check out the motherboard manul to see how much maximum RAM you can have. The second issue as you think the speed will be increased, you are right but only if your softawre uses more memory than you have in RAM, because in this case OS swap the data from RAM to disk and it makes performance slow.

After all you can slightly increase the speed.

Thanks
