Dell computer.5 yrs.old. Very, very, slow. What can be done? Have dial up internet service. Also, what does memory upgrade mean?

Hi,

There's nothing you can do about your internet speed, dial up is dial up and is known to be slow. If you want fast internet then you would need broadband.

A memory upgrade would speed up the overall performance of the PC. For example: the computer may take 5 minutes to fully boot up and programs taking time to launch. This would not fully resolve but help it to be more responsive.

A memory upgrade is always recommended by me. I expect that your computer can be probably maxed out to 2GB of memory.

Regards.

Acer aspire one slow running on skype video

That system is upgradeable to 2 GB DDR2 RAM (one stick) which would probably help, but if not there's really nothing else upgradeable in that system. Going with the current costs of RAM (when shopping online, like at newegg or zipzoomfly) it would be worth it to upgrade it just to give it a try and see if that does help.

I have an old packard bell D1000 multimedia intelpentium, 133mh prcessor,1.2gb hard disk,32mb ram.33600bps modem 8x cd rom, what can be upgraded if any. I only use it for grandchildren but would like to...

rm,

Most likely, more RAM (memory) will help. That computer can hold a maximum of 128MB or RAM.

The EDO memory for that computer is no longer manufactured.
[72-pin EDO SIMM]

Used memory and possibly non-moving inventory are available.
Any such memory would be at a much HIGHER cost than current memory. (64MB is around $50)

I know you didn't ask for a recommendation; however,
1.) I recommend that you NOT upgrade the memory.
Even if the computer is upgraded to the max, it will still have similar performance issues.
Here is a link to a memory supplier;
or google: ""packard bell" d1000 memory"

2.) Consider a $275 Compaq computer from Office Depot - fully modern computer with DVD / CD, 2GB memory, Windows 7, AMD processor.
I know that's a lot of money for the purpose; however, it may be today's best bargain.

Excelling computer memory (RAM)

If you really wanna increase the RAM level acceptance you have to upgrade *********** board. You can force more than 512mb RAM with your current system. You can use Vista in which you can connect external USB drives which can act as RAM (but only in Vista).
As of now, you can put more than 512mb RAM in your system.

Three things not mentioned 1. Specs for Ram will any 172 pin ram work? 1. HDD type and specs for upgrade. 3. type of DVD drive used for upgrade

You need DDR SDRAM - 333.0 MHz - PC2700 (184 Pin)

The current is a CD-RW / DVD-ROM combo - Integrated, 24x (CD) / 8x (DVD-RW) / 2x (DVD-RAM) this is actually quite sufficient, most CD ROMS never burn at full speed anyway. If you really want more capabilities in my opinion it is much better to go to an external CD/DVD/BR burner, it will work faster and be a lot easier to install.

Current HHD - 40.0 GB - 4200 rpm IDE, you can go to 100 GB if you need to, get a 7200 RPM for more speed.

My computer is really slow. it has 128 mg of RAM.

Check your computer brand and see how much GB your meomory can take, but 4GB will be perfect for xp and vista. check your pc brand either if Dell and Hp and check it online how much the high meomory can take.

Upgrading my laptop processor

When you're running an average load, start Task Manager and view the performance tab. If the amount of free RAM is low, then definately upgrade your RAM. Plus, nowadays it's really cheap to upgrade ram.
As far as upgrading your processor, that can get a little tricky and expensive.
Also, what do you mainly use your computer for, and what operating system do you use?

I suggest you first restore your computer to a previous date when the drive was working propperly *USE SYSTEM RESTORE*

If that doesnt help Run an ant virus scan and Anti spyware scan.

Check the cables connecting the drive in your computer for defect of age and replace if necessary

Check the drive on anoter pc to see if you get the same proplem , if you do then you will need to change the drive as its life span is ending

If it works the something is wrong with your computer, backup you data, Format the hard drive and reinstall windows , your drivers and software and check the drive to see if its working.

if no then the problem is hardware. you might want to considering upgrading

NB.. defragging you hard drive before formatting might help
