Question about Dell Inspiron E1505 Notebook

1 Answer

Though my laptop(Inspiron N 5010) had been laminated, but i accidently dropped some sulphuric acid(concentrated) near the touchpad. It wasn't able to destroy the lamination so no harm done but some of it escaped below the layer,on the touchpad.Resultingly, the corners of the touchpad have been destroyed(burnt actually). The area that was was not affected(major part of the touchpad) is still functioning.I won't be able to get it checked till a month. I wish to know of the potential harm, what should I do,how long would it take to get the touchpad changed and how much would it cost approximately?

Thanx a lot for the advice.
But I had started removing the lamination thinking of removing the acidwhich had visibly destroyed the sensors at the corners. After removing,I had realised that what seemed liquid had dried completely so there was no point in even removing the lamination.
So if had reached beneath the panel,it might have dried there too.
And I am not at a place I'd be able to get a new one.So I'll have to wait for a month to change it.
Can I just carry on with what is working of it?

First thing you might want unplug it, remove the battery first, then remove the palmrest/touchpad panel and neutralize any residual acid that might have gotten inside that area beneath the panel with baking soda and water(dry it well when done). I saw 2 touchpads for your model selling on eBay for $15USD. Not hard to replace, just a few screws and a plug. You can get the instructions on how to remove that panel from the Dell site. In any event you might even get someone locally who knows what they are doing to replace it for $50 (parts and labor). Good luck!

Well, considering WHAT was spilled on it - you do know that even dry, it will continue to eat away at anything it came in contact with including the wires, connectors and printed circuit board. In a months time you might be replacing more than just the touchpad - you might not. Either way, take care and good luck. :P

But I am presently in a hostel where I am liable to only software problem issues.I'd be going back only after a month. What should I do till then?

  • i_would_reig Oct 03, 2010

Yesterday when I had removed the lamination and touched the area in concern, nothing happened to my hand, not even irritation, though it could burn my hand when liquid.
    What do you say now?

LOL - I have nothing more to say - If you want to know more - then read up on the properties of sulfuric acid. Good Day.

Well believe it or not,I spent more than an hour doing that..............Bye.Good day.

P.S - I have decided to go on with whatever has happened and will change whatever is required(fingers crossed) after a month.

What fossil fuels cause acid rain

all do
it is a result of burning sulphur based oil ( most crude oil has a sulphur content) that is converted to sulphuric acid during combustion
that is causes most old exhaust systems to "rust" out
it comes out into the atmosphere in the exhaust steam and when it is concentrated enough in the atmosphere comes down as an ph value as acidic in rain water

What is the chemical reaction that take place in the lead acid battery?

the sulphuric acid reacts with the lead in the plates with the result that the acid breaks down and tends to go water and the lead becomes lead sulphate
when a battery is dead flat, the plates are all lead sulphate and the density of the acid is approaching that of water
that can be tested with a hydrometer
When a charge is applied to the battery terminals , the process is reversed and the lead sulphate returns as lead and the water ( low ph acid) returns to sulphuric acid

I cant find my touchpad icon

You can do a system restore in your computer to revert it back to the known good condition.

go to start or pearl > Accessories > System tools > system restore. Select the date when the synaptics driver was still in your computer.

I hope this helps.

The drain is clogged and I do not know the procedure to remove the elbow

I would suggest you try "one shot" , it is concentrated sulphuric acid which could unclog the drain. Try to remove the elbow may involve in damaging seals or you may require some water sealant to stop any new leak. Most plumbing shop can advise you on that. One shot is available here in the Uk and I can't guarantee you may find it in your location. Hope this helps.

Dell inspiron 1520. touchpad buttons stopped working, plz help me how to make it work? nothing happened to it, it stopped suddenly!

There is a driver for the touchpad on Dells website. Download it and re-install its driver. You may look 4 a switch at the top of the pad some manufatures like HP/Compaq have a on/off switch 4 the pad. You may have turned it off by accident.
