Question about Intel Motherboard

Computer won't run windows and come up with a trap-handler error

I have recently replaced the K7SEM motherboard and found that although the computer powers up it reports the drives on ide port for secondary master and slave are incompatible (press F1 to continue) and after starting on the primary hard drive and sometimes giving the Windows XP flash screen then screen goes blank and nothing happens. I have tried the hard drive in another identical computer and it works fine, have replaced all the ribbons and tried other CD/DVD drives but nothing changes. I swapped the floppy to format the drive with DOS but I got no further than the DOS 6.22 screen and press Y to format - after which it just seemed to wait forever. I am drawing the conclusion that the replacement motherboard which I got from Ebay is faulty - unless there is something obvious I don't know about.

You must set your BIOS up correctly to allow the correct drive to boot. Also XP must be installed with SATA support.

On the IDE Port, set the jumpers to the hard drives/cdrom on CS(Cable Select) this lets the BIOS and the ribbon cable decide which is primary (Master) and which is secondary (Slave) on that IDE cable. if they were configured wrong you would get an error.

If the IDE channel is no good, try switching the primary and secondary IDE ribbon cables.

Need a BIOS update for K7SEM motherboard. I am running Ubuntu 10.04. Is there a software that will allow me to update the system?

First you need to find the revision. Seems revisions are v1.0, v1.0+B1 and v3.0. My board is a v1.0+B1 since there is a little "B1" sticker on the MB just above the gold ECS heatsink.

Then go to the ECS Taiwan website to get drivers. ECS.com.tw.

Wiring diagram on a elitegroup k7sem

There are a few ECS motherboards listed on ECS web site. Each has a different revision number. Choose your correct version and download the manual for the MB. You will also need Adobe reader installed to view the manual. Adobe is a free download; http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/
ECS K7SEM MB;
http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/ECSSearch.aspx?menuid=0&lanid=9&keyword=K7SEM
Once the manual is downloaded go to page 10. Turn to pages 16 & 17 to connect your case to the MB.

Upgrade k7sem motherboard

Yes, if the video-card is "PCI" or "AGP" (not "PCI-express").

If a motherboard has "built-in" video, enter BIOS SETUP, and either "disable" it, or set the "first" display-device to be add-in video-card.

On boot up computer keeps restarting with a single beep motherboard model- k7sem elite group

the symptom you're describing my be a classic Gigabyte response to bad memory. First of all, go into bios, make sure your RAM voltage and timings are set correctly. If they are correct, you likely have a bad stick of RAM. Remove one stick, test the system, if the problem persists, swap sticks and try again
also try this if it continues Right click My Computer click Properties -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery. Uncheck Automatically restart. It should give you a blue screen that may give you some indication as to the cause.

Speed of ram to buy

if its just sdram, then pc133 is the fastest speed as its single data ram or you can fit pc100 although these are both hard to come by and expensive. The max amount of memory you can use is 1GB See below
