Question about Canon SPEEDLITE 580EX TTL Flash

2 Answers

Broken flash Canon 580 EX. During the shooting inside the flash explosion occurred. I dismantled the outbreak. The closure occurred on CANON 580EX FLASH PCB. From the capacitor on the board shows a black spot on the circuit. Flash did not turn on, and nothing works. Question - What payment change? Only CANON 580EX FLASH PCB or CANON 580EX FLASH MAIN PCB also change?

Between FLASH PCB and the capacitor is insulated. Traces of a high-voltage arc is from the FLASH PCB. Elements on the board in the soot. Probably broke FLASH PCB. I am interested in statistics - how much impact damage on FLASH PCB repair MAIN PCB.

Most likely that Capacitor has "Gassed" as we say. It is now destroyed, however usually too the Driver Semiconductors "Blow" as well. I have seen this before, it is not uncommon. An enormous amount of energy is stored in this capacitor and circuit, and they often fail in an explosive manner.
What you need to do, is find a Canon authorised servicing center, contact your local or head office of Canon, and inquire as to a local repair center.
Now when you take the Flash in for repair, please ask for a 'Quote" before allowing any repair work to commence, this then will allow you to make an informed decision as to repair or replace.
It is hard to give an exact cost but I would expect, that around $80.00 to $125.00 for the basic repair, would be about right for a repair. BUT depending on what exactly was wrong, it could very quickly escalate.

I think you may find, that the cost of repair, may even approach, the cost of a new unit? This is also why getting a "Quote" is beneficial.

However if you can desolder and solder, could obtain the EXACT Rating and Value Capacitor and Semiconductors, (read ALL damaged bits) and were prepared to do a little work, it is entirely possible to repair this unit oneself. but be very careful when doing so, as flash guns can give a very very nasty "Bite" (speaking from experience :) lol)

This could just be a bad capacitor, or the boards could be damaged, it's hard to tell without checking things out with a ohmmeter. Sometimes the chemicals in an electrolytic capacitor can dry out, causing it to heat up and explode, and in that case you can usually get by just replacing the cap.
Take it one step at a time...replace the cap, if that doesn't work, replace the Flash PCB, and lastly, the Main PCB.
If you have a friend that's handy with checking out electrical components, they may be able to help.
Good luck, and try changing the cap out first. That may fix you up.

My canon 580 EX II stops firing even with new batteries

You must disable the 580EX II form using the 4AA.

4AA must be needed when using hv power pack.

Just let the 4AA use & display the LCD panel.

There is a button with three arrows pointing to the right on your 580EX. Press this until the 3 arrows appear on your flash LCD. That is second curtain sync. The other function of that button is for High Speed Sync
