Does another phone work at that jack? Try a different phone cord (RJ-11). I like to use a simple older phone for testing. Do any of the other jacks work?

Find where your telephone service comes in and open the box. If you are lucky, you will find RJ-11 jacks in the box. Test for dial tone there. If there is no dial tone, contact your provider and have them fix the line. (If the service box doesn't have an RJ-11 plug, you will need the provider to test the incoming phone line.)

If the problem is only at the one jack, open up the outlet box and check for loose or broken wires. Some use a screw connection; others use a keystone jack (which requires a special tool to press the wires into the connection). For the screw type, you strip the insulation on the individual strands. The keystone has teeth to penetrate the insulation so don't strip it back. shows how the jack should be wired.

If none of the inside jacks work, you need to check any exposed wiring for damage. After that you need to check the wiring inside the walls. Your telephone provider will fix this for a fee.

I hope this helps.

It is Emerson EM6516 and it is plugged into my comcast box. Maybe it is not compatible with it. It dials, but I cannot hear it and people can hear me, but I cannot hear them. It says it is dialing to let me know that it is dialing, but no dial tone.

I do not know this model and it isn't on the Emerson site. What type of box is the Comcast box? Is it a cable modem, a FiOS box or something different? The next question is are you dealing with a VoIP, digital telephone or old fashioned POTS system. The most likely issue with the new technology possibilities listed above is a filtering problem so that there is interference on the line. Try disconnecting all devices except for the phone. If the problem goes away, then I'd check if you need filters on the line to keep the data noise away from the talk line.

Alternatively, the phone isn't compatible with the system. Digital phone service needs a digital phone for example.

My initial suggestions were based on plain old telephone service.

Bell Studio 4500 DECT phone with answering machine: just out of warranty, this phone does everything properly up to entering a number, then dialling, BUT not producing a ringing-tone or getting through to...

I gather you have the setting for tone and pulse set to tone? Also are you aware the ringing tone is generated by the phone company? When you dial a number and it connects, the phone provider sends the ring signal to the dial phone and the ringing signal to the dialing phone. Do you get a dial tone before dialing?

No dial tone pressing hook, NG and Poor line condition transmission report on sending and receiving. Confirmed good dial tone on line in and on phone on ext. Copy, display, everything else fine. I hear...

Make sure that you have your telephone line from the wall jack plugged into the port on the fax that says "LINE" and that your telephone is plugged into EXT.

All your cables and jacks seem like they are working since your phone gets a dial tone, the onyl thing could be that the wires are mixed or the modem on the fax is broken.
