Kirk mcdowel,

If you have good soldering skills and can work on small items you may be able to do this. It requires removing the back of the unit, removing the board that the tuner is mounted to, removing the tuner by unsoldering, opening up the tuner and inspecting it to see if it can be repaired. If the board is damaged you would have to replace the tuner. Not too expensive, maybe $50. If the board is not damaged you will need a new "F" connector for PC board mounting. Then you will have to fit the unit and solder it into place. If the board has no hidden cracks it should work when reassembled.

If you do not believe you are up to the task I would advise calling a reputable shop and have an experienced technician do the repair work. The choice is yours.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Key up with no antenna connected

I am unsure what the question is but i believe you are asking if it will hurt your radio to keyup without antenna attached the short answer is yes.
When testing with a watt meter you should transmit into a resistive load aka dummyload or antenna.

I have seen this on the Quest units also. The problem is most likely in the flip up antenna connection. If you or know someone who is fairly comfortable in soldering small electronic connections it is a fairly easy fix. First, you can verify the problem is in fact the built in flip up antenna but connecting an external patch type antenna to the antenna port on the back. If the problem goes away, then the problem is definitely in the built in antenna.
If you lay the GPS display side down with the flip up antenna to your right, take a small phillips screwdriver and removed the two screws holding the endcap in place. Gently remove the endcap and CAREFULLY pull the antenna horizontally away from the GPS unit. Once you have done this, you can see the antenna is actually two pieces. With a small jewelers flat blade screwdriver, GENTLY pry in between where the two portions of the antenna shell meet and separate the two pieces of the antenna shell. Once this is done, it will expose the antenna circuit board and the small brass looking antenna connector. If the problem is in fact with the antenna connector, it may be loose or come loose in the process of prying the antenna shell apart. Use a low wattage soldering iron and solder the connector back in place being careful not to bridge the solder points. Reassemble the antenna and reinstall it on your GPS. Again, if you are not comfortable working with small electronic solder connections or don't have the proper equipment, get someone who is.

Yes. Use an external DVD drive with a USB connection temporarily to load programs. You can remove the broken drive from the laptop and have it repaired.

My antenna no longer seems to work, is it an easy fix?

The antenna connection on the Quest is very fragile and is easily broken internally. Fit an external antenna and this should fix your problem.

Can't find satellites

The internal antenna BNC connection (the little steel bayonet that the secures the antenna or extender cable) is a common failure on these units. The threaded retaining ring on the outside of the antenna BNC comes loose when installing/removing the antenna connection, and eventually the BNC rotates and the solder joint inside fails. This happened on mine recently, if you are handy fixing small mechanical parts and a good solderer it is pretty  easy to fix. Remove the batteries, remove all six outer case screws (but not the one with the oval metal plate) and gently pull the housing apart. Check the solder connection of the coax wire to the BNC pin & shield. If it's broken and the BNC is loose in the GPS case, tighten the outer BNC retaining ring VERY tight, add a drop of thin super glue (Hot Stuff or Permabond CyA, etc) to keep the ring/BNC/case mated, then repair the coax solder  connection. Replace all the screws and test it outside. If it's an aviation GPS you would of course have this done by an FAA licensed avionics specialist. Wink wink.

Very faint volume on radio.

Since this problem goes away sometimes, you problably have some broken solder connections in the radio. If you are very good with a solder iron this can be fixed without much problem. If not, you need to take it in to a repair shop.

There really isn't anything else that can be done. The antenna connection will not cause this problem, so you don't need to worry about that.

I hope this helps you decide how you want to handle the problem, if so a good rating would be appreciated.

Let me know if I can be any more help. I have been repairing car and home audio for over 17 years and have figured out a few things in that time.
