I know how to underline - my problem is that I can't find the keys needed when an underscore is required in an email address, I have asked other
laptop users [no-one with a toshiba unfortunately] with no success.
Any help would be much appreciated.

On most keyboards, the underscore is Shift+Hyphen (usually to the right of 0 on the standard keyboard's row above the QWERTY keys). If you want to underline an email address and your email program supports HTML, you can use <span style="text-decoration: underline;">firstname.lastname@example.org </span>. (You could alternatively make the email address a mail-to link, <a href="mailto:email@example.com">firstname.lastname@example.org</a> .)
This depends on the edition features of the system you are using. Some sites allow underscore others do not. You can try Ctrl+U to start the underlining and then Ctrl+U to end it. Sometimes the code is <u> to start and </u> to end (or some sort of embedded code). If the site has an editor you may be able to find a help screen for formatting by pressing F1
Alt 8 is the underscore on the Swiss French keyboard, but I would think if you loaded Windows 7 English it would use the English layout which is "shift" and the key to the right of "0". Worst case, you can use the On-Screen Keyboard which is under Control Panel> Ease of Access Center> "Start On-Screen Keyboard". Once you have it open, right click on it on the "Task bar" and pin it to the task bar for easy future access.
Which program are you using to create the text or document? Microsoft Word?
If you are using microsoft word, wordpad, notepad, microsoft works, etc. if you look at the top of the window usually you will see the letters B, I, U which stand for Bold, Italicize or Underline. You can highlight text that you've already created then select the U to underline the highlited text. Or you can click the U and it will underline everything you type until you click it again.
While composing email in hotmail you can use the toolbar under the subject bar
here you can see the formatting bar, with Fonts>Size>and formatting settings
so when you press the respective buttons by selecting text it will become underline and you don't need to have underscore for underlining

Do not worry about the underline (dash under the words) it is not of any significance when you record or copy and paste the email address. This means that the computer / operating system has identified it as a email address and automatically hyperlinked so that if you click on it it will directly open a mail client.
example: A@b.com is having a underline which need not be noted it just has to be noted down without the underlink. As you have well noticed _between words is of significance and has to be noted down without any mistake but not the line below.
