Question about Dell Dimension 8100 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Upgrading Graphics Card

I have an old Dell Dimension 8100 with a max 1024x768 AGP graphics card, and I am getting a new widescreen monitor. I need a cheap graphics card so I can have the right resolution, and I don't really know what would be compatible. Any ideas?

Thanks

So your dell only has a AGP slot.

You need a AGP card

On nvidia side you can get
The geforce 6000 - series
Geforce 7000 series

On Ati side you can get
Radeon x1000 series
Radeon HD 2000 series
Radeon Hd 3000 series

Remember they have to be AGP

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop. It needs a monitor. I tried new ones from Best Buy and Office Max but they say no signal when I hook them up..I tried this computer with monitor in the following

Thank you for replying,
As per the diagnostic LED's, it is an issue with Video initialization failure. Your computer has onboard Graphics which is built into the Motherboard.
Video Initialization failure could happen if there is :
Unseated AGP card
Bad AGP card
Bad motherboard

As per your Svc Tag your system doesn't have AGP Graphics Card, Probable issue with MOBO.
This computer doesn't have a AGP Slot (Graphics Card Slot) to try connecting Graphics Card.
Need to repair/replace MOBO.

Thanks.

Help with upgrading Dell Dimension 4600 GPU

June,

The Dell Dimension 4100 Desktop PC, utilizes an AGP slot on the motherboard, for a graphics card.

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/p/17152514/17275500.aspx

There are different styles of AGP expansion slots.
The one on your motherboard was the last current style of AGP -

AGP 8X

Therefore your Dimension 4100 uses an AGP 8X graphics card.
It is (Was) an Nvidia GeForce FX5200 graphics card, and the AGP 8X style.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGP

To replace it just use a graphics card that is AGP 8X, and is better, or equivalent to the GeForce FX5200.

You also need to know that your Power Supply in your computer, will handle the power requirements for the computer system, AND your new found AGP 8X graphics card.

Power Supply was rated, at a maximum Wattage rating of 200 Watts.
Problem is; that back in the day when the Dimension 4100 was made, the Power Supply manufacturer 'Fudged' the real Wattage specifications.

Power was (Is) more like 60 to 70 percent of what is stated.
Divide 200 Watts by 10
= 20
Now take that times 6, for 60 percent.
= 120 Watts
Now take that times 70, for 70 percent.
= 140 Watts
ACTUAL power

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4410189&CatId=2234

I would recommend this one, but it requires 250 Watts MINIMUM,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=853908&CatId=2234

[Graphics card manufacturers, base the Minimum power requirements for their graphics cards; based on a test computer system.

So the Minimum power requirement stated, is not only for the graphics card; but ALSO the rest of the computer.
The test computer system is usually based, on all of the top of the line, power consuming hardware components; of that time

Top of the line powerful Processors, and Motherboards.
Add to that the maximum amount of Ram Memory, that can be used.
Two optical drives, (CD/DVD drive)
Processor fan, and at least two computer case fans ]

KNOW THIS:

A) FOLLOW Anti-Static Procedures

Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

Relieve your body of Static BEFORE reaching inside your computer, and BEFORE taking any new parts out of their Anti-Static bags, or cartons.

Computer on a table, computer Unplugged from power, computer case open;
TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

IF, you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return

B) Windows running on your computer, PUT the Installation disk that comes with the graphics card, in your optical drive tray.
(CD/DVD drive)
Install ALL software.

There will be Drivers you are installing, and also a graphical user interface. (GUI)
The GUI for an Nvidia graphics card, (Evga GeForce 6200 is an Nvidia card), is the Nvidia Control Panel.

(For ATI it's Catalyst Control Center)

Driver: Small piece of software that allows the Operating System to communicate with a device

In this case the device is the graphics card.
What version of Windows operating system was not stated.

-> AFTER <- you have installed the software, and if it asks you do you wish to restart your computer; the answer is -> NO

Close all windows, go back to your desktop screen.
Now turn the computer off normally.

Follow Anti-Static Procedures, and Physically install the graphics card.
Note*
The AGP expansion slot on the motherboard, will have a type of Locking Arm on it. With most the end of the arm, has a 'fingerdip' in it.
Makes it look as though you press DOWN, on the end of the Locking Arm, in order to release it. (Unlock)

Actually you GENTLY pull up a little on the PLASTIC Locking Arm, to release it.
Release to remove the old graphics card, and to install the new one.

After the new graphics card is installed, attach the monitor cable to it, and close the computer case.
Turn the computer on.

You MAY have to go into the Nvidia Control Panel, and set Screen resolution, and other parameters.

(Look up your monitor by it's manufacturer name, and model number. {Back of monitor - Model Number}
See what the Screen resolution is.
Example - 1280 x 800 pixels

Set Color quality to High (32 bit)

Have additional questions please post in a Comment, or Reply.
(Below my solution)

[When a device is installed on a computer with Windows, Windows will 'break it's neck' to find suitable, matching drivers.

If THE drivers are not there, Windows will match up one of it's THOUSANDS of generic drivers.
This = NO
A Driver Conflict can result.

Windows: "Which drivers do I use? These or THESE?"

With THE drivers installed first, Windows will find them.

Hello, I have been using my asus vw222u monitor for a while now, connected to my dell dimension 4600 pc. I have been running the resolution at 1024x768, and been getting relatively clear pictures, but...

Your graphics card will not support that refresh rate @ 1680x1050. you may need to upgrade your graphics card.

Here is the best price/performance card for your machine. and will support upto 2048x1536 @ 85Hz

Hope this helps.

Will a dell dimension 2100 support dual monitors

Yes it will but that will also depend on your graphics card to a degree.
To do it properly you need to install a new graphics card and disable the on-board graphics card from the bios.

Your new card should support std VGA as well as DVI

DVI is also capable of being hooked up to many large screen tvs

Ack graphics card wont fit in any input slots

the adapter u are using is pci express and the dell dimension 9100 are not compatible.. try returning it for either a pci (usually the white slot) or AGP which in most cases is brown.. the AGP will be your best performance.. if return is not an option.. then it seems that a new pc is in your best interest.

Playing cod4, slow jerky poor performance

First of all I hope that you properly uninstalled the graphics drivers and restarted before you installed the graphics drivers for your new card. Old left over drivers can cause a major problem.

Assuming you did it right read below.

What graphics settings do you have it on? And is your firewall set to let it open?

You should also list your processor and the speed and make of your memmory.

I play cod4 on high with an agp .1950 pro @ 1024x768 resolution.

turn off antileasing and aniostropic filtering. Turn all optional settings off but keep textures on medium

No offense but you have the low end version of the hd 2xxx series and can probly only play at medium at best.

You can also go into catylst control panel and make sure the settings are auto balanced.

Is my Motherboard compatible?

Try to find out what the AGP voltage is on the motherboard.
Some graphics cards use 1.5 volts and some use 3.
If it's a 1.5 volt AGP slot and you plug a 3 volt graphics card in, it either wont work or you could permanantly damage both card and motherboard.
