Have you some experience in opening and repairing Electronic equipments? Or does your husband / partner have any experience?
From what you have described, it seems that one of the belts has snapped or become loose.
Unplug the VCR, opem the bottom cover, and check the belts. If any of them is loose, or snapped, replace.
