My forerunner 305 won't charge without major manipulation of the cable (ac or usb) into the cradle. This seems to be a problem with other models as my 201 did the same thing before upgrading. Any suggestions?
Question: My Edge or Forerunner 205/305 won't power on. Is there a soft reset that I can do?

From the Garmin web site.

Answer:
If a Forerunner or Edge 205/305 is unable to power on, a soft reset can be performed to un-freeze it. This will not erase any user data and is most effective if the device is connected to the computer while performing the reset.
To reset the Forerunner or Edge 205/305:
In addition, please make sure that the device has the latest software version

Use an emory board to gently scrape both the contacts on the underside of the device and the contacts on the charging cradle. Works like a charm.

Scraping with a knife finally resolved the problem. It seems the sweat does cause oxidation. The charger I think is a design flaw.

Eraser didn't work as one of the contacts was too oxidized. Scraped carefully with the cutting edge of my pocket knife blade and it now works.

Thanks for the tip, i had not used my forerunner 305 for a couple years, had noticed some oxidation on the four contact points, especially on the left one, had initally used a pencil eraser, but ended up using the edge of a cutlery knife to scrape of the oxidation. Its recharing now.

All the scraping with knives and using an emery board to clean the contacts did not work. However, on the off chance I pulled the USB cable out from the laptop just a little bit and lo and behold the device started charging. Thank god! I'd miss the little guy!

I could not get my 305 to charge
I thought one of the brass contacts had fallen off or mine didn't come with one because I only had three. The eraser didn't work. When all else failed, I scraped with a razor where it looked like is there had been a contact. Sure enough, there was a contacted there. Now it's charging thanks. Next time I'd use something besides a razor but it worked.

I tried scraping the 4 small contact points on the back of my Garmin 201 with a pocket knife also, and this solved the charging problem that I was having also! Thanks!

I tried cleaning the contacts and didn't get anywhere but when I changed the AC-to-USB connector (the thing that you plug into the wall outlet), everything worked fine.

Wow ......that worked.
thank you so much.

Had the same problem. Turned out I only *thought* it was the cradle and/or cable being finicky. Actually, the problem was one of the four contact points on the back of the 305 had oxidized and if all 4 don't make good contact with the cradle, it won't charge. Apparently, manipulating the cable only coincidentally helped, if/when it did help, perhaps by subtly shifting the contact point so that a less oxidized part made contact.
Anyway, rubbing the contact points with a pencil eraser cleans them enough to get a good charge. I've had to break out the eraser every 2-4 weeks.

I'm having the same problem (again). A new charger in January fixed the problem for a few months. This time, I also tried swapping out the charger, plug and charger from a friend's in various combinations with mine. The pencil eraser sounded promising, but it didn't work for me.
9/7/08: Tried to use my Forerunner 305 this morning and found it hadn't been charging while in the cradle plugged into an AC outlet. Checked to see if it would pick up a USB port and failed there as well. Swapping cables didn't help either. Tried cleaning the contacts with an eraser, as suggested here, with no success. Anymore suggestions? DCW
forerunner wont charge or download information from my run to the computer. wont charge through usb port or from wall outlet. computer states that usb port not recognized. my forerunner is a 205
When I put my forerunner 305 in the charger last time it indicated it was charging and that the charge was complete but when I went to turn it on nothing. Assumed it didn't charge so put it in again but there's no indication it's charging. Won't charge using USB either. Tried the eraser suggestion to no avail. Any new solutions out there?
