If the indicator is displayed, it reminds you that the interests you are calculating are compounded. It does not appear when interests are simple.

I take it you mean a 12C Platinum.

Press f ALG. ALG is the f-shifted function of the EEX key, just above the double-size ENTER key. This will switch the 12C Platinum from RPN mode to Algebraic mode, and ALG indicator will light up instead of the RPN indicator.

To switch back to RPN, press f RPN. RPN is the f-shifted function of the CHS key just above the EEX key.

The C indicates the calculator is using compound interest for the odd period. To switch to simple interest, press STO EEX

To switch the radix mark, turn the calculator off, press and hold the . (decimal point) key, press the ON key, then release both keys.

This indicates that compound interest will be applied to the odd period (for cases when n is not an integer). To use simple interest (and turn off the indicator), press STO EEX.

The 12C does not have the common logarithm function built-in, but you can calculate it using the natural logarithm function (the blue g shift of the %T key, 2nd row, 3rd key).

The common logarithm of x is the natural logarithm of x divided by the natural logarithm of 10, or

log x = ln x / ln 10

Press 1 0 0 0 g [LN] 1 0 g [LN] /

and you'll get the result 3.
