the problem is when i did all of that my HD never shows up, I plug in the external HD and all that happens is the white light simply blinks, there is no detection of the HD or soft ware at all. But thanks for your time and hopefully you can recommend something else.

It is possible that the driver is not being detected.

Check the drive's status by checking your Device Manager. Click the + sign under Disk Drive. You should be able to see it there.
Now check if it is being detected in My Computer.

Did you set a partition?

Follow these steps to, hopefully correct your problem:

    • Plug in your external HD

    • Righ click on My Computer

    • Click on Manage --> Disk Management

    • On the bottom right, scroll down to where you'd see your HD

    • Right click on that, select Change Drive letter and Paths...

    • Click on Change and select a different drive letter (prefer a higher letter)

    • Click on OK on the way out.

    Did you set a partition?

Also lets try to eliminate computer problem by trying to plug the drive to a different USB port, better if you can plug this to a different computer.

Did you set a partition on this hard drive? It is possible that partitioning could have corrupted some files and is the reason why Windows is not detecting it.

A single MBR physical drive is limited to 2TB in Windows. This is a common setup. You will need to break down and partition the drive in order to use it.

HP Mini 1000 VT won't turn on, lights flash when plugged in

Hello,

This is a common issue when the unit has been dropped or jarred really hard. The click is more than likely the hard drive trying to read the disk but can not access information.

With that in mind, try this: Remove all USB, SD, or any cards and attachment from you computer. If you have one at hand, connect an external monitor to the pc. Power on. If you get an image on the external monitor, restart pc and press F8, select "Enabel-low-resolution video" and move forward. If you get a picture after this, your video drivers need updating. BUT......

The clicking sound is a major concern because usually the hard drive is the only hardware part that have moving parts. (other than the optical drive or if you have a solid state hard drive.) If you have a dard drive the same size or close with an operating system on it, replace your hard drive with the GOOD drive and retry. If it boots, you need to replace the hard drive. (and hopefully you have a backup of your data)

Worst case, you may need an authorized HP agent to service your pc.

Good Luck

Hi. Sometimes, there are compatibility issues on external drives. Most recent computers will read them while others may not. Either the external casing or the cable is causing this.
