Question about GE D52GW12 52" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

My Flyback is burned, questions!

So I opened the back of my D52GW12 and like everyone else, my Flyback is burned. Is this a difficult part to replace myself. My father knows how to solder, but not very small points. Does this thing have small points or big points to solder?
Also, how do you get the board out of the TV? I can see all the ribbon cables can be disconnected, but the cables going out of the top of the flyback don't seem to be detachable.
I was looking through the other problems like this, and I remember I read something about a horizontal transistor that goes bad when this happens, but I can not find that again.
I have had this TV for about 3 years.
Thanks in advance!

What about the horizontal transistor? Should I worry about that? Do I need to buy something to replace it?

How long will the TV hold a charge for after it is disconnected from the wall? It has been out for a a couple hours. Is there any way to drain the charge quickly?

  • peterfares May 26, 2008

How do I remove the wires from the flyback? Am i supposed to cut them and solder them onto the new one, or do the new ones come with wires?

Is not difficult to replace if you have some electronics knowledge and your very handy with tools, first your gonna need a DESOLDERING TOOL , makes the job easier to remove the solder points ( this flyback your replacing have big points) .
I suggest before removing the PC BOARD to take a photo of the board w/ a digital camera , in case you get confused when connecting all the ribbon cables and plugs . know your way around when starting to take the board out . about the FLYBACK long cable that goes up, it could be solder , this is the main FLYBACK that feeds all three color guns .
and about the HORIZONTAL transistor , I suggest to replace it
its not expensive , the HORIZONTAL transistor is usually located near around the flyback , look for a black square with
three legs attached to a metal wall (acts like a heatsink).
hope this information is helpful , AJ

YES !! You need to replace the horizontal transistor , also buy a HEAT SINK creme ,it comes like a tiny toothpaste like ,

To drain any charge left , your gonna need like a long screwdriver to ground the red cable of the flyback

Hi,here is the basic setup you are correct you will need to replace the horz output transistor located near the flyback.
you could replace the fly back but it is hard to un solder..
the board. The ribbon can do disconnect but be careful.

flyback diconnection first check the small red wire follow that it is connected to screen adjustments on the front in most cases you will have to disconnect
the front grill pulls out or there are screws you will see a little black box with pots on it the lead go to that. please be careful this is high voltage and even disconnected it hold a charge. Know you need to disconnect the fat thicker red lead. that gos to a splitter near the
back
it pulls out twist first then pull out becareful it is trickey and could break.
You could have a repair shop look at and give you estimate on job. see how much they charge for estimate .

I would leave that site and email and they can tell you which HOT transistor you need, but most times if the flyback is burned from arching the HOT will most likely be good, but they are only a couple dollars so you may want to change that as well.

the wires will pull out of your old flyback. It takes alot of force but they will come out new flybacks for projection units dont have new wires you have to reinstall the origional wires into the new flyback. The flyback wont have a charge to it just the capacitors and the CRTs do but the flyback wont have any charge in it.

Where exactly are the convergence amps?

THIS TV DOESNT HAVE ANY CONVERGENCE AMPS IT USES ABOUT 20 TRANSISTORS TO DO THE SAME JOB. YOUR PROBLEM WILL BE CRACKED SOLDER ON THE FLYBACK TRANSFORMER AND ONE OF THE FUSES THAT LOOK LIKE LITTLE RED BOXES NEXT TO THE FLYBACK WILL BE BAD(OPEN). RESOLDER THE FLYBACK AND REPLACE THE FUSE AND YOU WILL BE GOOD TO GO.
