What is wrong if my computer keyboard stops working? I've tried both wireless and direct wired, neither work. Checked Control panel status-all reports show keyboard functioning properly. What's up?

So far no luck. I'm using wirless mouse and keyboard. Both work off same transmitting device. Mouse works fine. I've changed batteries in the keyboard, reset, swapped usb ports, ...etc. Mouse still works in all situations, not keyboard. Plugged in hard wire original keyboard that came with computer,( hp Compaq ) in the back of the hard drive. Still no luck.

Checked keyboard status, as you sudjested, it says "the device is working properly"

    What's next?

I tried this already! Did you not get my response?

  • rschneider14 Oct 02, 2010

I have changed ports around. I have tried other devices, ( ipod, camera, blackberry ) All work.
I don't understand why the wieless mouse works and keyboard does not. The keyboard does not work even when it is plugged in directly ( 5-6 pin connection not usb ) to the hard drive.

The first question i have for you is it a USB keyboard? if so are you you using the exact same usb port for the wireless key bored?

If so its very possible that your usb port or card or driver has gone bad. If you have any other usb devices try switching them to the usb port that your using, or try switching your keyboard to a different usb port. For example if you have some on the front of your computer move it to the front or vise verse.

You can also right click on my computer, go to properties then hardware tab, then device manager, scroll down tell you see your usb controllers and you can see if they are all working properly here.

If they are not try getting a new driver or you may have to replace the usb card. If you don't have a usb card and its on *********** bored, you may check into getting a usb card for a cheaper fix.

Good luck

What about changing around and trying the usb ports? Do other devices other then the keyboards work in the usb ports, such as a printer ect?

Other then going to netscape.com and searching for "Microsoft service pack 3""then the os your using" and downloading that from microsoft and installing it. The only other solution if you still dont get any response from the usb port from any device is try finding and downloading the drivers for it or replacing the usb device cause it may be damaged, because one or the other keyboard should work.

Ok, then its possible that your normal keybored is broken, but you need to reinstall the drivers for the usb keyboard. Your usb ports are fine. Sorry just sometimes it takes some back tracking to come to a solution.

1.If you plugged your keyboard into the mouse port (or vice versa), follow steps 2 and 3.
    2. Shut down the computer and plug the keyboard into the keyboard
port. The keyboard port is usually marked with a "keyboard" symbol.
Plug the mouse into the mouse port (usually marked with a mouse symbol).

    3. Reboot the computer; the keyboard should work now. If keyboard
doesn't work, check your BIOS to make sure the BIOS recognizes the
keyboard. You should see the words, "installed" or "enabled" under the
    keyboard.

    4. If the BIOS recognizes the keyboard but it still doesn't work, you may have a bad keyboard port.

Other then that, if you have recently installed a new device, or installed some type of new software one of the drivers is just over ridding your keyboard driver allowing it not to work. One other thing you can try is if you have someone that will let you borrow their keyboard do so. OR try using your keyboard on their computer, but it really shouldn't be the keyboard itself that is damaged.

Why the wireless keyboard and wireless mouse don't work on my acer Aspire Z1-621 all in one pc

Strange that BOTH stopped working. Did you check batteries?
Remove USB controller for mouse and test keyboard alone,
Then replace mouse and remove keyboard USB You should use another keyboard (USB or PS2) because your computer won't start up without a keyboard.
If both fail, test them on some othrer computer, ask a friend. Might take sust seconsds to do it.
If test on other computer shows ok, you may have some problem in USB ports.
If actually neither of them work anywhare, so no way but still interesting question, how both of them went bad at same time?
Actually I 've heard many complaints of these wirelss keyboards and Mouse. Probably there are some very bad quality around.
I had a wireless mouse and worked only for about 3 months.

I have a cordless mouse/keyboard K350. The mouse M510 stopped working. Purchased several months ago. Now what?

If you can, check your wireless mouse with another computer to determine if it is working or not. If it works on the other computer, remove any M510 drivers from your computer. Plug the wireless adapter back in, and see if you computer recognizes it and the port it is plugged into (control panel/system/devices). If the computer recognizes it and loads software, try your mouse again.

I cannot get my keyboard or my mouse to work with my dell computer. what can i do?

Please add more information to get specific assistance. Are these wireless devices? If wired, do they use USB or PS/2 connections.

For wireless devices, try replacing the batteries and resynching to the receiver. (You may want to check putting the receiver in different USB ports.)

For wired devices, disconnect and reconnect. For PS/2 devices, you will need to restart the computer to check if the devices work. For USB devices, try connecting to different USB ports.

Next step, try using a different keyboard and mouse (that work on another computer (stick to USB or PS/2 to match the current pair)). Try a wired set if the problem is with a wireless pair. If those work, continue diagnostics on the wireless keyboard and mouse. Check if the mouse and keyboard work on another computer. If they don't work with another computer, replace them.

If another USB keyboard and mouse pair don't work in any port, your USB ports may have failed. Check if even one port works enough to access the Device Manager. (Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager (Win7); similar directions in other versions of Windows) Check for a problem with the drivers (For USB ports, scroll down to the USB drivers and look for a triangle with a yellow exclamation point or red x). Try to update the driver or roll it back. If that doesn't help and one USB port works, a USB hub may solve the problem.

Otherwise if the USB or PS/2 ports do not work with any devices and the driver fix doesn't work, then I'd suspect a problem with the ports on the motherboard. Replace the motherboard/computer.

I hope this helps.

Keyboard won,t work but every thing else does, cant seem to get the keyboard wire to click into board?

Try to reinstall your keyboard. Put on your PC, and click on the menu, Setting, Control panel, and Add hardware wizard. Just follow the instruction to reinstall your keyboard. Or you can left click at the Control panel, Systems, Hardware, and the Device Manager. Then, click at the keyboard, right click properties and status. If the status says the device
is working properly, try putting on another keyboard
and see if it works.

Cannot connect wireless printer to computer

Yes call HP they can look up by serialnumber to see if machine is in warranty period. Sounds like a board problem with wireless board. Does it work direct with a wire to computer ? Does your wireless in the computer work? Check control panel - system - device manager and see if there are any yellow marked items. If there is then the problem is in the computer...
