It would be gray try to slide the button to the right hand side of the wi-fi logo to turn it on..if this still doesn't work try this
settings->general->reset->reset network settings this should work if doesn't try to restore the ipod to the factory settings but it'll be at a cost of loosing all the data in the ipod.

good luck

I have a 3rd or 4th generation Ipod touch that my daughter gave me ....the wifi is grayed out. I tried to reset my wifi box already and it didnt change a damned thing ..still greyed out.. will someone...

The first thing to check is to be sure that the device is not in airplane mode. If that setting is turned on then the wifi is disabled. If that setting is ok then try this: Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.

How to Fix Wi-Fi on Iphone/Ipod Problem?

This are the common problems of Iphone/Ipod Wireless Fidelity...

* iPod Touch shows no WiFi address (Tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to WiFi Address.

* iPod touch appears to be connected to a WiFi network but cannot use Wi-Fi for checking email and surfing the Internet.

* iPod Touch WiFi icon is showing as grayed out.

* When you tap Settings > WiFi and then you see no network entries.

First you need to back up your data by syncing your iPod touch to iTunes. It is very important you do this before proceeding with the fixes below.

1.On the iPod Touch go to Settings > General > Reset and then select Reset Network Settings. Now see if the device displays the WiFi address under Settings > General > About and scrolling down toWiFi Address. If there is a WiFi address listed then you issue is resolved. Else try method 2 below.

2. On the iPod Touch go to Settings > General > Reset and then select Erase All Content and Settings. Now see if the device displays the WiFi address under Settings > General > About and scrolling down to WiFi Address. Ifthere is a WiFi address listed then you issue is resolved. Else try method 3 below.

3. If the above fixes don't work then the only thing left is to restore the iPod touch software using iTunes which will erase all data on the device. So before restoring make sure you back up your data by syncing with iTunes.

After the restore is complete, you can re-sync with iTunes to load the data back to your iPodTouch. Now see if your device shows a WiFi address (tap Settings >General > About and scroll down to WiFi Address). If none of the above settings and fixes work ,then you might want to consider getting your iPod touch repaired by Apple.

Hope you see it useful...

Hi,
You could try this: Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings.
After resetting that, try to connect to your WiFi again and enter the password and it should work.

How do i get online with my ipod touch

You must be connected to WiFi. Go to the gray Settings application (one of the starting applications) and then click on WiFi (it should be on the top) and then choose a network to connect to. If there is no password you should automatically be connected. However if it is a locked network you will need to type in a password. If you do this correctly, you should see a checkmark next to the network of your choice. Then, you should be able to use the Safari app to browse the web.

I have a 8gb itouch the WiFi section is greyed out and it says no wifi my firmware is 1.1.5 please help

If the WiFi section is grayed out. then this is generally a failure with the wifi antenna. sometimes it can just be the software. A restore using itunes will tell you a lot - if you restore and wifi is still grayed out the you ipod has a hardware issue you need to get it repaired

restore instructions

Wifi is connected on ipod touch 8gb and has the latest update and still can not get online service keeps saying to require vpn information

when you go to settings, and general you will see a wifi setting on top is the wifi network switch, move it to "ON" with your finger.
below that is a brower push tap and set to push.
below that is your network, tap and join when a window pops up asking for your network passcode, look at your router label and enter the WEP code into your ipod.
close the settings and go back to the front, you should see your network in the upper left of the screen. it will show a signal cone with lines and what type of network speed.
If you have anymore issues, let me know and I will help more.

My wifi won't work on itouch

Hey, i had the same problem. I you already have a wifi connection and it still says, "Safari is not connected to internet" Goto settings. Click the blue arrow next to the wifi name, scroll all the way down and click renew lease. It should probably get the IP address right and you'll be good.
