Please help! my sony vaio vgn-a417m overheats- runs slowly and makes a loud noise. I use it for long periods of time but try and leave it off as long as possible to cool down. Do I need to clean the fan? How could I do that? Thank you

You need to check 3 things. Fan in your Power Supply (if it is still spinning) and fan in your processor (if it is still pinning) a Small brush will do to clean these Fans.

and btw, if your video card has a fan too. you need to check that as well.

Hope this helps

Sony Vaio fan making noise

Hi:
Not sure of a user cause for the fan to run full speed, unless you are using the laptop in a high heat environment, or setting it on a bed or other area where it is not getting adequet cooling air. If it does it right away, when you turn it on , cold, then there might be a laptop hardware problem. If you leave your laptop on all the time, then you might be inducing the problem. I had a HP high performance laptop, that the fans would not turn on at all till it ran an hour or so, then they would stay on loud for 10 or 15 minutes, then shut off, then cycle.

At times my sony vaio laptop turns itself off

The Sony VAIO CS-series Computer model has a known issue with its fan. If the fan is making abnormally loud noise and causing the Computer to shut off then service will be required. You can contact Sony Service Center to get the Computer repaired.

However, if the fan is not making loud noise but the Computer is shutting off automatically then possibly it may be a virus or the failure of the power supply unit. In this case, you may run complete system scan using an updated Antivirus program such as Norton to check for any potential threat. Furthermore, you can perform the C: Drive Restore using the VAIO Recovery Center or complete System recovery using the Recovery disc to ensure that the issue is not related to Software.

Follow the instructions given in the link below to access and use the various features of the VAIO Recovery Center:

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C1001992

Click on the sublinks given in the blue text on the page to view further information.

If the issue persists even after system recovery then the problem is related to the power supply unit.

Fan of VAIO CS-118E makes loud sounds

That is definitely a problem from the fan. What you can do is to call sony and check if they still cover Fan replacement for this specific mode.
