Question about Printers & Copiers

After a lightning strike, our computer mother board, television, telephone and printer, all of which are served by Time Warner, required service. After everything has been repaired, the printer still will not power up. Everything stemmed fromthe ups failure. What can you tell me about the most likely solution to our problem? The printer is the Pixma 160.Additional info: Power cord is OK. USB cable has continuity. Unit is under warranty.

The company that manufactured your UPS will most likely have an insurance policy if its product fails and damages any of the connected equipment. I would contact them about this. Hopefully you have all your receipts for the UPS and printer. If for some reason or another the UPS manufacturer won't cover your printer then your next step is to contact Canon at 1-800-OK-CANON to inquire about warranty service on the printer. Don't mention the lightning, just say it stopped working all of a sudden and if it's still under warranty they will most likely replace the entire printer.

If all of this fails then your only other option is to replace the printer, this class of printer is not usually repairable or is more expensive to repair than to buy a new one.

Thundering causes a high power voltage to get into any device which will deffinetly damage the power unit inside them...

Considering your problem, the printer might not be checked properly after the power unit repair inside it...(might have other circuit boards inside burned)

Printer ports might have black burned covering (no contact with each pin) try shaking the power code...

Power cord might be burned internaly

If you have the warranty go get it fast...(but the warranty is not valid for physical damages <burned up things> )...

PLEASE RATE ME ( FIXYA ).<blue boxes>.....................

Got hit by lightning and won't turn on. Power source is good. Need to find out how to take it apart.

Most of the time after an appliance has been hit by lightning, it is toast. In the case of a printer you can probably buy a new one for the cost of the replacement part. Next time make sure you also purchase a surge protector to plug your computer and printer into and then you will be protected from lightning strikes.

From your description the HP printer is damaged beyond repair, when a lightning strike occurs it also went through the power supply affecting the main board and destroying ic's and other parts. It is more than likely the interface cord from the computer to the printer also took a jolt hitting the printer from both sides finishing off any chance of recovery, you would be further ahead replacing the item.

Our hp printer j4680c took a lightning strike. We replaced the power adapter but when we plug it into the printer the light goes out on the adapter. Is there anything else we can try? The unit doesn't...

This sounds as if it has shorted out the main power board inside the printer. Some small TV Repair shops handle out of warranty printer repairs, but will charge considerably for this. Unless your willing to pull it apart it would be more economical to replace the printer. But ask around, someone may be willing to give you a quote, and this should be weighed against the cost of a replacement
Unfortunately with lightning strikes the amount of power surging up the line can destroy many components inside the printer, and not much can be done from the outside.
Sorry it was not the answer your looking for, but lightning is a electrical devices worst enemy!!

Usually the instructions say to NOT have the USB cable plugged in BEFORE the software has been installed... Maybe you had it connected before??? If so, uninstall and unplug the USB cable and reinstall per directions.

After lightning struck in my backyard, printer won't turn on.

HI, this was an unfortunate surge that has fried the power board Assembly in this unit. it has also fried the main control. this may be a total loss unless, you are considering replacing the entire mother board and power assembly as well.

Replacing the main control board and power board will restore proper function.

Lightning Strike Broke Printer

I hate to say it, but you'd be much better off buying a new printer. Prices are so low these days, you'll spend much less on a brand new one then parts and labor, even at a discount shop.
You can get a new all-in-one printer for as low as $50 from tigerdirect.

My epson cx9400 fax states that i need a DSL filter in order to use my fax, as I have Time Warner telephone service which is digital. I would like to know where I may obtain this filter, as I have checked...

You already have the filter if you have both phone and internet on the same line. The installer placed the filter between the lines the phones connect to and the outside line the computer connects to. Just connect the fax line to any working phone jack.

I have a Brother MFC 7220 - it won't print but says manual feed. Also the telephone is not working. All this was fine yesterday. The machine is about 1 year old.

Hi zoltansz
Have you tried the following
Use the telephone cord going in to machine on a regular telephone. If this works cord is fine. Plug cord back in to machine. Press the dial button on machine if you hear a dial tone check the settings for Pulse / Tone dialing (refer to manaul). If you don't here any dial tone the fax modem on the machine is faulty (posible lightning strike on telephone line. You will then have to take the machine in to a service centre.
Please feel free to uase the Repair Service Directory on this site to locate a service centre close to you.

Lightning Strike

I was unsuccessful in finding any parts for your printer but I did find some pretty cheap on ebay. It might even be worth looking on there for broken printers for parts. Here is one of them that I found that right now is at $24.99 http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-OFFICEJET-6210-ALL-IN-ONE-PRINT-COPY-SCAN-Q5801A-ABA_W0QQitemZ230165068772QQihZ013QQcategoryZ70824QQcmdZViewItem
