I ran sfc/scannow on my windows xp system. It shut down and now my computer won't turn back on at all. When I hold down the power button and f10 I get a few light flashes and the fan sounds like its trying to start but it doesn't.

Welcome to the world of boot sector virus. Your antivirus detected a boot sector virus and deleted the file from there not knowing that the particular file was necessary for booting xp. Now only option which you have is to repair your operating system with the help of a bootable XP OS CD. insert the cd inside the drive and when prompted to boot through CD just hit enter follow the on screen instructions. When the first repair option comes just press enter i.e. don't go for first repair option continue with the onscreen instructions till you get the get the second repair option on the bottom left side of your screen. Just hit R when asked and after that just follow the instructions and your pc will be allright. After booting don't forget to uninstal the antivirus.

How do I restore XP rundll32.exe?

I've used SFC to repair Windows 2000/2003 servers in the past, it debuted in Windows 2000 and it fixes system dlls. Start > Run > type 'cmd' and 'sfc /scannow'. You will have to insert a Windows XP SP2 cd for it to work (or mount and ISO of XP with a tool like alcohol 120).

If the %systemroot%\system32\dllcache folder becomes corrupt or unusable, use sfc /scannow, sfc /scanonce, or sfc /scanboot to repair the contents of the Dllcache directory.

Hi,

It appears the .Hal file is missing or corrupted. You can restore the computer back to factory default,to do so, follow the below steps: Turn OFF the computer, now as soon as you hit the power button, keep on holding "Alt" key & keep on tapping "F10" key, i.e Alt+f10, it will open the recovery console, select full factory restore and follow onscreen instruction. NOTE: This will erase all the datas on the computer.

Thanks & regards,

When trying to reinstall windows xp, the process keeps failing during setup saying, "The file comct132.dll was not copied correctly. The file Setup on your hard drive is not a valid Windows XP system...

Click start/run Type: cmd
In the Command window type:
SFC /scannow Note the space between SFC and /scannow

You can copy/paste: SFC /scannow

Hit the Enter button
keep your xp cd handy in case you're asked to chuck it into your cd rom

The above should replace missing files and get you to the place where the install can proceed.

Let me know. __________________

RAN RECOVERY DISK AND NOW CAN'T GET ON LINE

The suspicion of possible errors in the system files in Windows, it may be worth a try to run the "hidden" program that comes with just Windows.
System allows an administrator to scan all protected files to verify their versions.

If System File Checker discovers that a protected file is overwritten, it retrieves the correct version from the cache folder (% Systemroot% \ System32 \ Dllcache) or source files for Windows installation, and replaces the incorrect file.

System File Checker also checks and filling up the cache folder. You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to run System File Checker.

If the cache folder becomes damaged or unusable, you can use the sfc / scannow, sfc / Scanonce or sfc / scan boot to repair its contents.

To use SFC:

1) Press Start
2) Select Run ...
3) Enter: sfc / scannow and press OK

you should find the windows cd and put itin the cd player on the PC, if you have some corrupted system files so the process will bring it from cd to the computer

Try clicking the Alt button and the F10 button at the same time right after you turn the laptop on, and see if it will go into the System Recovery mode. If it will, just follow the instructions for a partial or complete system recovery.
