Question about IBM ThinkPad T40 2373 Notebook

3 Answers

Have an older T23 IBM Thinkpad. Was running Malwarebyts which I just loaded on the system due to a problem at work and wonted to make sure i was ok at home. System ran for aprox 32 min and apeard to lock up a couple of times and then i recieved a notice on the screen that stated Critical Error Occured System must restart. System restarted and now the original IBM screen comes up and system attempts to boot and i get a fault saying NO Operating System Found. I also attempted to reload windows and it stated no Hard Drive Found. Does this mean my Hard Drive Crashed. .

Hi,

I'm a laptop pro and work often with older systems. In a hard drive loaded with any version of Windows, there is a "boot sector". Yours has certainly failed, and it the system will not boot from a Disc (I'm guessing you're in XP) then it's not likely you'll be able to boot back into XP on that drive.

However, it is possible to purchase on eBay a small hard drive enclosure that will come with a double ended USB cord. You need to determine if your drive is SATA or (more likely) IDE.

From that enclosure, you can connect to another computer, bypass the boot sequence and just view the files and recover them.your drive is trashed.

Past that, and unsuccessful, then finally and yes,

This is a possibility, the T23 is a very old laptop.
Normal 0 Check the BIOS to see if the hard disk is detected, if not open then re-seat the hard drive.
If the BIOS does not detect this hard drive, then the hard drive is probably faulty.

If it was me, I would not waste my time and money trying to get a new hard drive for this ThinkPad.
Disk drive manufacturers do not make small capacity hard drive anymore and the current range of hard drives won't work in your ThinkPad because the BIOS cannot support these hard drives.

There are 2 things that you need to check. one would be the SATA/IDE cable connecting the motherboard of your Notebook and the Hard Drive itself.

Formatting ibmthinkpad 2647

Hi there,
Power on, when you see the IBM logo, press F12 once to load the boot menu options, provided that you already have an Operating System CD / DVD in the drive, which should allow you to format your HDD.

I have installed ubuntu on my ibm thinkpad t23 and have no sound. can you help.

try running alsamixer in a terminal window.

and adjust the levels of all output devices. Use left and write arrow keys to move from one channel to the next.

Some may be muted (completed turned off) which is indicated by "MM". Press the "M" key to toggle and use the up arrow key to raise the volume.

If this doesn't work, then you may have deeper problems.

Use the pull-down menus of System / Preferences / Sound to see if OSS or ALSA gives better results. Pulse Audio is trickier to use in later Ubuntu editions, but it should work ok with Karmic.

Good luck.

I have a IBM thinkpad t23 and cant boot it up it comes up that missing windowssystem32configsystem.it wont let me go to safe mode orsafe mode with command promt or last known good configuration how do I...

Thst means that you have an important file for the Operative System to run. Try to get an Operative System Installation CD (which I assume in your case is Windows XP) and run the installation procedure. The first option you are going to see is to use Recovery Console to repair XP, skip this and continue to Install XP. Then you'll see an option that says "REPAIR", choose this one (it won't wipe out your personal info, just will fix the corrupted files). This usually happens due to lack of maintenance done to the computer. Hope it helps, good luck.

P.S.: If this answer your question, please leave a review.

How do i find out the bits my thinkpad t23, 2647 is using?

From what I can see, this is an older computer. I'm sure it's running a 32bit operating system.

If you'd like to confirm it, go to Start > Control Panel >System. It will show your operating system and tell you if it's 32 bit or 64 bit.

Yes you have no backlight. The screen is all dark but in the back you can barly see it. You inverter is bad on you thinkpad. You need to replace it. I have a IBM thinkpad 600e and i got one for $9.95 so they can be cheap. They are located under the lcd. When you open it up it is there or can see that it is attached to the light dimmer swicth so you will know that is it. Thats your problem
