It sounds like your Lacie has died as the clicking noise it the drive attempting to find the tracks on the disk itself and not suceeding . Most Lacie products have a 12 month warrantee on them and so would suggest taking it back to the supplier and getting it replaced
Hope this helps

That is what we were afraid of - this is the 2nd one we've had in the last 2 years. All they do is sit in our office and get turned on when we back up photos - are they really that big of a piece of junk?

The later Lacie drive normally have Western digital drives inside them which are a little touchy when it shock and temp changes unlike the more robust seagates. In saying that I have a Lacie here that is over 3 years old and has been bounced around which is when they had the Samsung drives installed

It is possible that there isn't enough power to the hard drive. I have been in a position where an additional 5V power supply is necessary to provide additional capacity .

The clicking is the drive "hunting" for the info on the disks so that it can then pass it up to the computer who can then do are "there you are" and put the drive up on the screen for you. If you want to be sure that it is the drive itself you could void the warranty by opening it up and put the drive into a PC . If the drive is SNAFU then looking at the price of Hard drives you could just buy one and replace it

Hi,
Sorry nothing to do your harddrive is dead. you might be able to open the case and replace the harddrive with a new one. Try searching google or youtube on how to do that.
Regards.

My LaCie is not recognized by my computer, makes a clicking noise when it tries to start up. I've used this external hard drive for several years with no problems.

It has most probably just reached its "end of life". Several years for a hard drive reading and writing is a good track record.
You can probably take the casing apart and replace the hard drive. Just make sure that this is an USB 2.0 interface before spending the money.

Lacie Hard Drive not being recognized on computer

If you are running Vista, You might be one of many people who are reporting an update that is causing some buggy behavior. Try this:

Connect the drive but do not Format the drive, right click 'my computer' then 'manage' go to 'storage/disk management' view the drives; your usb drive will not be allocated a drive letter. You can set one manually or leave it for about 2~5 minutes for one to be allocated auto. Each time you connect the drive you may have to do this.

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

Find the drive on the bottom section, right-click it and assign an unused drive letter of your choice. It should then appear in windows explorer.

External hard drive

I just worked through this same issue with LaCie tech support and they fixed it- it was a bad power supply. Fortunately I had another LaCie drive and when I plugged the power supply from that one in to the "misbehaving" drive, everything booted up fine.

Can't access my lacie external hard drive

I would first plug it in to a different PC, this will tell you if the problem is the Lacie or Windows Vista.
if it works on a different PC then remove it from Device manager or go to the Lacie website for Vista updates.

If it does not work on a different PC then there are 3 possibilities
1. the drive got cleared data lost
2. the enclosure is bad (I would bet on this)
3. the drive is bad

purchase a USB enclosure, remove the drive and install it in the new enclosure plug in and test.

Hope this helps

Lacie lost evrything and is now clicking

Not without a clean sterile environment. Exposing the drive to room temperture and environment can damage the internal platters. i am willing to bet it the drive as well, but the clicking sounds like a bad drive arm, and continual attempts to use it may make the drive arm tear into the platters.
