Question about Dell E172FP 17" LCD Flat Panel Monitor

1 Answer

Monitor stays dark

The power button is green, and I can very faintly see the menu, but it is not clear enough to make out the text.
Have the settings been changed? (other people use this PC too) How do I reset? Or is there another problem?

Check that VGa cable is firmly connected at both ends. If you have a DVI connection try switching it to DVI.

Look for bad caps with leaking/bulging tops or seals first.
If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Send the monitor. It's a power supply problem. My 15.4" LCD has the problem, too, whenever I move the monitor down, it powers off, and the menu disappears as well, but I'm going to fix the screen.

Extension cable

Have you connected an extra cable as extension or Replaced the original cable with a Longer one?
In Either case the cable is to blame,Normally you should be using one single high quality cable from computer to Input of monitor. There is signal loss due to longer lengh or joint.
Hope this answers your question?

Monitor blinks on then turns off after computer boots up

It could be your LCD backlight giving you problems. When the image "goes off" shine a flashlight in the lower left hand corner of your screen. Look for the ?Start? button, if your backlight is not working you?ll see a faint ?start? button if you look closely. Depending on the monitor this is usually and economically repairable problem. Picture not clear and shuts off after about 2 seconds after being turned on

It could be your LCD backlight giving you problems. With the computer on and the monitor power LED green shine a flashlight in the lower left hand corner of your screen. Look for the Windows ?Start? button, if your backlight is not working you?ll see a faint ?start? button if you look closely. It could be your LCD backlight giving you problems. With the computer on and the monitor power LED green shine a flashlight in the lower left hand corner of your screen. Look for the ?Start? button, if your backlight is not working you?ll see a faint ?start? button if you look closely. If you can see the start button then it?s either the backlight tube or the electronics that controls it. This is repairable but I would not recommend the typical user try it unless they have tools and some experience with disassembly and handling of electronic components. It goes without saying that if you are unwilling to risk damaging the monitor you should take it to your local repair shop. You will spend about $50 more in labor but you save yourself guessing which parts are bad (a potential savings) and you will typically get a warranty of sorts. If you don?t see the start button I would next suggest you connect this monitor to another computer to see if the problem goes with the monitor or stays with the computer. Let us know what happens and if you need some more assistance.
