Question about HP Photosmart C6180 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

The message center says" The door on the device is open. Please close the door to continue." and the machine info screen says "carriage jam. Open door, clear carriage jam, and press OK to continue" I have opened the door in the back and replaced it, opened the ink cartridge door and closed it, turned the machine off and on . I don't know how to clear the carriage jam. The first part of the last paper that I printed jammed and I still haven't found a missing piece but have looked through the printer with a flashlight etc

Hi,

To start with, this is a VERY common problem. Many reports were already published for the same. Google and you would be surprised to know, how many people are already affected by the same. Kindly take a look at :-

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=au&lang=en&docname=c00829896&product=1153494

Follow all the 3 steps carefully.

Next make sure that there is no paper jam. Take a look at :-

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00720198&lc=en&dlc=&cc=us&product=1153494

If the problem persists, something is wrong with the sensor and sensor flag.
The door sensor is visible when the door is open -- located on the left side of the opening, just about an inch below a silver screw head. (kind of hard to describe where it is.) The sensor is a black horizontal bar. If you see it, try pressing it in with something thin like a paper clip. Press the sensor in about a 1/2". If the "door open" message goes away, then you know your sensor is good. Next look to see where the sensor flag is located on the back of the door. Again, it's on the left side toward the top of the door. The flag is simply a section of plastic that that sticks out far enough to engage the sensor.

If the problem cannot be detected, you need to send the unit for repair.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Check the LCD on your printer control panel or the status monitor on your computer for an error message. If there is an error message, follow the instructions to clear it.

If there is no error message, or if the problem continues:

  1. Open the access door.
  2. Disconnect the power adapter from the back of the printer.
  3. CAUTION: Do not use force on the printhead carriage to move it. Gently move the printhead carriage from side to side to see that it moves freely and there are no obstructions.

  5. Close the access door.
  6. Connect the power adapter to the printer.
  7. Remove the ink cartridges from the printhead.

Display message Carriage jam: open door, clean carriage jam and then press OK to continue

This error message is displayed by the printer when paper is jammed in one or more locations. In such a case, users are recommended to remove the jammed paper from the specified location. The entire paper path must be checked for any pieces of paper. To stop the message, open and close the top most cover of the printer. Lastly, verify the flags and the sensors. If the problem persists, the cause of the error message could be a broken sensor or sensor lever.

It seems you mistook Carriage Jam as Paper Jam, but they are different issues. Carriage jam means the carriage that carries the cartridges is jammed which needs to be moved or be cleared manually after opening the door.

Please follow the instructions mentioned here (Click Here) [source HP Support].

Good Luck.

Error message= open door clear carriage jam and

I think the message is instructions, as in
(1) open door (2) clear carriage jam (3) press enter
So there is something internal to the printer that makes it think it has a carriage jam, piece of paper under a sensor, dirty or stuck sensor.
If you can't find it using a bright light, try canned air.
