Check ... do you have a non booting CD in the CD drive or do you have a floppy disk drive that may have a non boot disk in it? Remove them.

Your operating system is corrupted OR the boot sector of your disk is failed or failing ... maybe your entire hard disk is failing ...

Try the press "R" to try to recover ... which will fix the corrupted files. If it is a hardware failure ... your computer wioll not 'recover'. If that is the case ... you will have tp put in a new drive.

If you have valuable files on the drive ... you may want to get professional help with this. There is that possibility that you can get a new drive and use the preent drive as a slave long enough to get your files off safely.

I have an HP Compaq tc4400 that I got from an old friend that had no use of it . but when I turn it on it says Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready but I dont have a disk ....

It sounds like there's a problem with Windows (assume that's the operating system it used to have). I think you'll need to get a Windows install disk. Installing Windows is actually not that hard, and it sounds like you've got nothing to lose.

If you don't have access to a copy of Windows, why not try out Windows 8 - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/release-preview

I assume it'll only be free for a few more days as Windows 8 will be released in under a week now.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Derek.

Laptop start up repair

The hard drive has issues or the window files are corrupted, press ALT and F10 together this will access your recovery partition for a full install of your operational system to factory setting, if this fails use your backup recovery disc if available, now! if the CD does not work have the hardware checked out for possible replacement.

Boot into bios to verify system can see the hard drive. If system shows drive in bios and you are using windows xp or later try using the recovery console options by tapping F8 repeatedly to enter menu. , if you have one. If no recovery console...use either the recovery disks created by the system administrator or the original install disk to attempt a repair option on the boot of windows.
Your hard drive might have damage or the OS my be missing or corrupt.......you might have to re-install the system.

Key note book vaio cr failed to start because some recent hardware or software change might have screwed it up, any way to solve ? Without a windows installation disc?

Hi kevin_yomama,

This issue may occur due to any Software or Hardware changes in the Computer. Restoring the Computer to an earlier date when the Computer was working correctly should fix the issue. However, it is required to restore the Computer in the Safe Mode.

Please restart the Computer, press and hold the F8 key to access the Safe Mode. Once you are there in Safe Mode, please click All Programs, Accessores, System Tools and System Restore. This will open the System Restore window, there, please select a date when the Computer was working correctly. Performing the System Restore to an earlier date should fix the issue.

If the issue still perists even after performing the System Restore in the Computer, you will need to perform the System Recovery in the Computer. Your Computer is shipped with a recovery partition which is present in the hidden part of the Hard Drive. You can use the Recovery Partition to re-install the Operating System in the Computer. Performing the System Recovery using the Recovery Partition will erase all the User Data in the Computer.

To access the Recovery Partition, please restart the Computer, press and hold the F10 Key. This will boot the Computer to an Edit Boot Options screen, please press the Enter Key there. This will launch the VAIO Recovery Center. Please select the "Restore C: Drive" option at the VAIO Recovery Center to perform the System Recovery. Performing the System Recovery will re-install the pre-installed Operating System, Drivers and Applications to restore the Computer to the factory settings.

Good Luck!

Please let me know if you have any further questions or require any further assistance.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi.

As the Recovery Partition in the Hard Drive is not working, you may try performing a BIOS reset.

Performing a BIOS reset should resolve any issues related to the Recovery Partition.

Please open the below link to view the steps to perform a BIOS reset:

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=C94679

As the Operating System installed in the Computer is Windows Vista, you may also try performing the "Windows Startup Repair".

Please open the below link to view the steps to perform the Windows Startup Repair:

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=C1002354

Please try performing both the steps which I have mentioned above.

Performing the above steps should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists, then the issue might be due to the Recovery Partition

The Files in the Recovery Partition might have been corrupted.

However, you may also perform the System Recovery by purchasing the Recovery Discs online.

You may purchase the Recovery Discs for the Computer by visiting the below link:

https://servicesales.sel.sony.com/ecom/accessories/web/productSearch.do?searchOperation=partSearch&searchText=Y8316061A&sessionId=ddyNo-T9pA_dxgMgnzHn_WX

Once you have obtained the Recovery Discs, you may perform the System Recovery.

Please open the below link to view the steps to perform the System Recovery using the Recovery Discs:

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=C460645

Hope this helps.

Reset a sony laptop w/o recovery disk

If you haven't reinstalled a different Operating system to that, the recovery partition would still work. To boot to that you have to tap F10 key several times immediately after pressing the power button when turning on the computer. Choose Recovery Center then press enter. Do a Complete Restore System, follow the prompts to finish. It will run the progress bar as like installing the OS with a Recovery Disc. That is if the recovery partition is not corrupted.

How do you restore the laptop with the internal restore system

1. According to the specifications available online, your Computer is shipped with the VAIO Recovery Center software, present in a hidden partition. You can use the VAIO Recovery Center to install the preinstalled Operating System, Applications and the original Drivers.

2. Restart the Computer and press the F10 key when the Sony logo appears to check whether the Computer is able to access the VAIO Recovery Center.

NOTE: Restart the System, tapping the F10 key immediately. This should trigger the System to boot directly to the Recovery Partition, and initiate the VAIO Recovery Center, without requiring the Windows Operating System to load.

3. If you're able to access the VAIO Recovery Center, select the option 'Restore C: Drive' and follow the onscreen instructions to perform a C: Drive Recovery to resolve the issue.

4. Performing a C: Drive Recovery will erase all the data present in the C: Drive and will reinstall the pre-installed Operating System, Applications and the original Drivers.

Sir please specify the Operating system which you want to install.

You can perform the following troubleshooting steps.

1) Your computer comes with a preinstalled operating system. The model also have recovery partition ( mostly in your D: drive) for installing Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium. You can use this recovery partition to install the operating system...

2) If you have created Recovery disks from the recovery partition then you can install the operating system from those disks.

3) If you have deleted the recovery partition and your recovery disks are damaged, then if your Notebook is under warranty , you can get recovery disks from HP with out any cost( FREE).
